About Us

The Victorian Equine Group runs two facilities, the Bendigo Equine Hospital and The Victorian Equine Group - Nagambie. The practice currently employs eight full time equine veterinarians, and between August and January, additional seasonal veterinarians. We see a busy and varied caseload encompassing both first opinion and referral surgical and medical cases. The practice services a number of Thoroughbred and Standardbred studs in the area. As such, the busiest time of year is in the spring when many neonatal foals and stud related cases are hospitalised.

About the Role

This position would suit a keen and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working as part of a team.  You will have equine experience, ideally including ambulatory experience. You will be happy to accept primary case responsibility but welcome the opportunity to use the knowledge and guidance of our registered equine specialists and other senior vets.

The Person

You will be a flexible, reliable professional with excellent communication skills, able to work effectively as part of a team.  Your previous completion of an equine internship would be well regarded although not essential. We can only consider candidates that have an eligible visa to work within Australia, for twelve months or greater, meet the full registration requirements of the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria and have a current driving licence suitable for driving in the State of Victoria.

MILDURA, NORTH-WEST VIC/NSW BORDER - FULL TIME MIXED New Graduates welcome

A full time position is available for a veterinary surgeon to join our eight to nine vet mixed practice in Mildura. Experienced colleagues and enthusiastic new graduates are encouraged to apply. An interest in equine work is a benefit. Our new and large purpose built hospital offers all the equipment and facilities to practice excellent quality veterinary medicine and surgery with friendly and supportive nursing staff. Digital x-ray, ultrasound with colour doppler, pulse oximetry, in-house laboratory and cytology, infusion pumps, oxygen generators and orthopaedic instrumentation are components of our practice. The practice has a busy medical and surgical caseload, mainly small animal (85%) and equine (10%), but does include avian and wildlife work in addition to the expected other species of cattle, sheep and pigs. The building now includes six consulting rooms and three operating theatres.

The equine facility consists of a large shed with undercover stabling, two horse crushes, equine scales, and a knock down and recovery room. Seven holding paddocks are available for equine work brought to the clinic. Equine specific x-ray, dental work with power float, artificial insemination during the stud season, and routine tendon ultrasounds are components of the practice. This is in addition to the expected colics, geldings, lameness work ups, stitch ups and laboratory blood work.

The clinic has nine full time and four part time nursing and support staff. The Practice is an Academic Associate Practice with the University of Melbourne, and in addition has veterinary students seeing practice from international veterinary schools as well as the other Universities in Australia.

So, if a rural mixed practice with a wonderfully varied caseload, and strong support staff appeals, then we would welcome your application. There is a strong emphasis on discussion of cases between colleagues at rounds each day, and we are a practice used to supporting new graduates as they embark on their careers. Bi-monthly webinars, practice membership of CVE, and each veterinarian provided with VIN membership gives all colleagues opportunities to continue to enhance their skills and knowledge. We expect veterinarians to embrace new challenges as experience dictates.

We need an experienced equine vet to take charge of the Equine Hospital.

COBDEN, SOUTH-WEST OF MELBOURNE - FULL TIME MIXED New Graduates welcome

The Hampden Veterinary Clinic is seeking a mixed practice veterinarian for a start in mid 2020. This position is available for either someone with experience or a new graduate.

Hampden Veterinary Clinic is a six vet clinic located in Cobden, 2 hours from Melbourne and in the heart of the South West Victorian dairy country. We are 30 minutes from the coast and the Great Ocean Road.

The clinic work comprises 80% dairy cattle and 20% small animal.

Dairy cattle medicine is a large component of our work, which means there is plenty of LDA and RDA Surgeries, pregnancy testing, calving’s, lame cows, bull testing as well as treating many sick cows.

We have 2 sector scanners and a curved linear ultrasound for pregnancy testing, along with a Riley tipping crush and bull testing equipment. In clinic, there is all the usual gear including a small animal ultrasound, digital xray and a brand new IM3 dental unit.

All work and after hours is shared equally, with 3-4 Saturday mornings to be worked during the busy winter rush.

If you want to have a kick of the footy or throw of a netball on Saturdays when on call we will strive to make it happen. The mantra at the clinic is that no-one should miss a social engagement because of work.

The wage is above award but dependent on experience. There is 4 weeks holiday, 1 week study leave, and RDO's for weekends worked along with an after-hours allowance paid. A dual cab ute and phone are supplied. We will also encourage and support you in any continuing education you undertake.

The Swan Hill Veterinary Clinic is a 5 veterinarian mixed practice on the Murray River. It is located around 3.5hrs north-west of Melbourne. The clinic is purpose built, very well equipped for small and large animal work. The clinic contains an indoor equine crush and indoor and outdoor stables, cattle yards and crush. There is a small animal surgery room, 2 wet prep tables, digital x-ray, endoscope, in house blood machines and ultrasound for all species. The majority of cases are small animal (80%), the remainder being horse, cattle and some sheep work.

The practice currently employs 8 vets (equivalent to 7 full-time) with a wide range of skills and interests, supported by a skilled and dedicated nursing staff. Our team prides itself on practicing to a high standard, and the support and training provided to younger vets and students. Special interests are encouraged. The high level of experience of our vets means there is plenty of support for less experienced vets. We see an interesting and varied case load comprising dairy and beef (and some export work), small animal, some horse and sheep as well as more exotic species. Distance from referral centres means that many challenging cases are handled in house.

WEST GIPPSLAND - DROUIN - MIXED PRACTICE New Position

Veterinarian required

A full-time position is available for a veterinary surgeon to join our 7 vet mixed practice in Drouin.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable new graduate who is interested in mainly small animal work but comfortable with occasional basic cattle and horse work. We have a well equipped clinic with an Idexx in house lab, full anaesthetic monitoring, digital x-ray, ultrasound, infusion pumps, dental x-ray and IM3 dental work station. Support will be provided by experienced vets and vet nurses.

The practice is 50% large, 50% small animal mix. The large animal component consists mainly of dairy cattle and equine, some beef, and alpaca and small numbers of sheep, goats and wildlife.

Salary is commensurate with award with after hours, superannuation on top of a base wage. After hours will be 1-2 nights a week and 1 weekend in 5, with an extra day off after the weekend on call. You will have the support of experienced vets when on call. Four weeks annual leave and 1 week study leave are provided.

Racetrack/Ambulatory Veterinary Associate.

The Ballarat Veterinary Practice Equine Clinic is a 12-vet practice that has a broad equine-based caseload. The practice is located on the edge of the Ballarat Turf Club, a world-class thoroughbred training facility where approximately 450 horses are trained, and 30 race meetings are held each year. The clinic has a surgical referral hospital, racetrack practice component and provides a general equine ambulatory service to the surrounding district. The hospital also runs an internship program.

There is currently a vacancy within the racetrack/ambulatory team. The ambulatory veterinarians provide service to all breeds of horses from thoroughbred and standardbred horses, through to all types of pleasure horses and ponies in the district. Typical general practice equine work is undertaken including lameness assessment, dentistry, lacerations, reproductive work including ultrasound scanning, in field colic assessment and all other general veterinary equine work. While the ambulatory service is primarily field based, clinicians are encouraged, where appropriate, to bring cases to the hospital where extra staff and facilities can assist them to undertake further examinations. Due to the size of the practice and level of experience there is strong support for our ambulatory veterinarians at all times.

Of the three in-house surgeons, two are specialists and one is an ACVS Board Qualified surgeon. The surgical team are available for consultation and assistance or referral of cases. The clinic has complete surgical facilities, ultrasound, digital radiography, endoscopy, scintigraphy, standing MRI facilities and the ability to house up to 28 horses.

The successful applicant should be a graduate Veterinarian with qualifications able to satisfy the requirements of the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria, and have at least two years veterinary experience. After-hours responsibility is shared equally with the norm being one night per week and one weekend every four weeks. Duties will involve all ambulatory services as outlined above as well as attendance at both thoroughbred and harness race meetings as the official race veterinarian.
