WANNEROO, NORTHERN PERTH - SMALL ANIMAL New Position
PART-TIME VETERINARIAN REQUIRED
Why would I come and work for Wanneroo Veterinary Hospital?
As I sat down to write this ad, I thought about the things that have been important to me when I’ve considered a job position as a Vet. Having had several jobs over 25 years myself, I realise that I have certain criteria that I aim to satisfy when considering a role as a Veterinarian.
- I like to have tons of fabulous support around me in well-trained and motivated nursing and reception staff.
- I like to have the space to practice high quality veterinary medicine without feeling like I have to hit my K.P.I.s.
- I like to have tons of experience around me so I can bounce ideas off my colleagues.
- I like to build relationships with my clients, establishing relationships that last for years – sometimes spanning the life of multiple pets.
- I like to have the clinical equipment needed to practice great medicine and surgery and to feel that I can really stretch myself professionally, as far as I’d like to go.
- I like to have the permission to refer tricky cases to specialists to achieve the best outcome for my patients, without the pressure of keeping every case “in-house”.
- I like to be fairly and generously remunerated for an honest day’s work.

I truly feel that our team of 8 experienced vets, 12 dedicated nurses and our wonderful management team have created a work place that quietly yet confidently satisfies those aims.
If any or all of my Happy Workplace Wish-List resonates with you, I’d welcome you to get in touch, as we are looking for such an individual to join us.
- We are looking for an experienced vet – We are looking for someone that could do 2 or 3 days per week - the hours in the vicinity of 20 - 25 hours per week, but we would be interested in speaking with someone that could do slightly more, or slightly less.
- We are looking for someone that likes a bit of surgery, or a lot. Routine soft tissue, neuters and dentistry is a must, but orthopaedic interest is a bonus.
- We are looking for someone that enjoys their consulting too.
- We are looking for someone that gets on with the job.

BUNBURY & EATON, SW WA - SMALL ANIMAL
Small Animal Vet, Full-time or Part-time.
What did I want as an experienced vet?
Over my career, I’ve been lucky enough to work in some great clinics, and some not-so-great clinics. By locuming and travelling, I got to see how a well-run clinic can be a joy to work at, but I also saw a lot of clinics where I would not have stayed long-term.
So, what did I look for when it was time to settle down:
- Family and life friendly hours. I have always wanted kids, and I wanted to be an active part of their lives. I didn’t want to be working every weekend and late into the evening, so I looked for a job where I would be home for dinner and bed-time every night, where I could coach their hockey teams and at the surf club, and even have a “dad-day” every week with a 4-day work week. I was happy to do some on-call, but my family time was precious so it needed to be as infrequent as possible. We share our after hours with another clinic, so it’s only roughly 1 in 12 weeknights on call. There is a share of Saturday mornings to work from 8:30am -12pm (around 1 in 5-6 weeks), but no weekend on-call. There may be an occasional inpatient to manage on the weekends you work the Saturday morning, but your weekends are otherwise yours to enjoy. We close at 6pm, but the last appointment at 5:40 is always blocked just in case there is a late call for a sick animal. This means we get out on time because we have time set aside for those last-minute cases instead of needing to squeeze them in to an already full schedule.
- Decent pay. None of us go into the industry to get rich, but we work hard and need to be paid well. I wasn’t willing to accept a job where low-pay would affect what I could do in my spare time, and I wanted a place where I knew they would value my skills. All of our staff are on at least 15% above award rates (from kennel hands through to senior staff), and experienced vets are on significantly more than that. For example, 18 months out should be earning $80000+, Experienced vets $100000+, plus super, fees for on-call and hospital patient work, etc. We pay all professional registration fees such as VSBWA registration, radiation license fees, etc. We also increase pay by CPI each year, so your pay will never go backwards in real terms.
- A great team. I’ve worked in places which were quite toxic. The wrong person can make work an unpleasant place to be. I love the saying “you’re better off having a hole in a team than an arsehole”. We have a great team, and with many of our vets having highly developed areas of interest, a lot of support and advice can be provided for unusual and challenging cases.
- Great clients. We have always been careful to set client expectations at a sustainable level, so they know what to expect when dealing with us. This has resulted in clients who trust us to always do the best by them and their pets. The work is so much easier and more enjoyable when client expectations match what the clinic reliably delivers. It also means that where a client doesn’t like the way we do things we are happy to direct them to a clinic which may better suit their needs. And we sack the rude ones.
- Developing professionally. The day I stop wanting to learn is the day I need to retire. After 20 years in practice I can do a lot of the work with my eyes closed, so I need to keep developing my skills in different areas to keep the job interesting. We encourage our vets to develop their areas of interest and fund the CPD needed to reach the levels they desire. Many of our vets have done Distance Education courses through Sydney University, and we pay for flights and accommodation for conferences and courses. We don’t have a set budget for CPD – if we feel it will benefit the vet and the clinic, we will pay for it.
- Career progression. For me, I knew that practice ownership was a goal of mine. Although it’s not for everyone, I feel it’s important for vets to have that option if it’s what they desire. The corporatisation of the vet industry has closed that dream for many vets, but it’s still open for suitable people in our clinic if that’s what they’re after.
- Clinical freedom. When I look at clinical freedom, I think we need to understand what it means for our patients. There is often a “best” way to approach a problem, so clinical freedom is not about ignoring best practice. It’s about working with the pet’s owners to develop a diagnostic and treatment plan for their pet within the scope of what they are capable of. Sure, we aim for the “best” option, but we know that in the real world owners budgets, lives, and expectations can get in the way. We believe that every animal should be treated to the best of the owners ability and within their means, and if the owner can’t afford all the bells and whistles we will work out what we can do within their budget. We don’t believe in KPIs.
- A great area to live. I knew I wanted to work in Bunbury. With miles of beaches, great sporting facilities, a location close to Perth and the south-west capes, and with it being a great place to raise a family, I actively looked for jobs right here.
- Toys. DR xrays, colour dopler ultrasound, in-house bloods, access to a CT scanner, multiple surgivet monitors, dental radiography, etc. It’s so much easier to do the job well when you have the right equipment.

On the positive side: Here in Busselton, there is wonderful weather, lots of outdoor activities, as well as the annual Cinefest Oz film festival, music festivals and great wining/dining options. We haven’t had any natural disasters since the whale stranding of 2005 and all but 1 of those 104 whales were returned to the sea! We work with endangered Western Ringtail possums every week as well as a varied companion animal case load.
Being an ASAV Hospital of Excellence, you know our standards are at a level that you want to work at. We have the opportunity of working up a lot of our cases in-house rather than referring them straight off. We love to continue learning, be that in medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, ultrasound etc. How do you want your career to progress?
We have a fantastic nursing team that are passionate and dedicated to their work, and receptionist support staff that look after all of us.
Our vets work a 4-day week between the hours of 8:30-6 Monday to Friday with the same day off each week. Saturdays are worked 1 in 4 from 8-1. We are now sharing weekend afterhours with another practice so we are only on-call for the weekends 1 in 8. And if you do see cases after hours then you are well compensated.
The above are all good points but the most important part of our practice is our team culture. Staff morale is exceptional. All our staff are dedicated to excel in their work, but also dedicated to each other. It is fantastic to see team members happily helping each other out with shift changes etc without any friction. We all genuinely like each other!
We pay well above the award but know that it is our culture which makes a difference to overall happiness at work and in life. New grads start at $70K + after hour bonuses + a generous CPD allowance every year. Depending on experience the salary wound increase up to $100K+.

On the negative side: Uummmmmm?! We might look a long way away, but we are only 2.5hours south of Perth and there are direct Busselton to Melbourne flights now!

TYPE OF PRACTICE – 100% small animal (with ~25-33% avian seen by owner)
LOCATION – Northern suburbs approximately 15 minutes from CBD
About us
Woodvale Park veterinary hospital is an independent, small, close-knit team based in north Perth. We are bound by our love of animals and the people who consider them their family. The practice owner comes from an academic and specialist background and thus values continuing education and the highest standards of care.
Our motto is ‘your pets are our pets’ and while this may seem cliché it is how we genuinely feel. Our clients appreciate that we care deeply for their pets and as a result we tend to attract people who are kind, compassionate animal lovers just like us!
Please click here to see photos!
Additionally, we uphold a commitment to treating each member of the team with the respect, patience and dignity they deserve and expect the same of any new additions.
The clinic is small but well-equipped. We have digital radiology (to include dental rads), ultrasound, in-house CBC, biochemistry, anaesthetic monitor with BP, SpO2, ECG and a dedicated sterile theatre. We have a visiting orthopaedic surgeon. Most cytology, including Gram’s stain, is performed in-house. The Position
- Veterinarian required for a small animal hospital in the southwest of WA
- An experienced practitioner would be preferred, but we are more than happy to get any applications!
- The hospital has a busy and varied caseload, mainly companion animals with some pocket pets, wildlife and birds
- Salary commensurate with experience, will be generous and very negotiable, plus a share of afterhours income performed, superannuation, AVA membership, telephone provided, professional insurance and vet surgeons board fees paid

- Continuing education is encouraged, and the practice will pay for or subsidise conference attendance, distance education courses or membership examinations.
- As we have a need both to replace a departing senior colleague and to provide for an expanding workload, working couples are encouraged to apply and hours can be negotiable for a second vet within our structure.
The Hospital

- A wide range of equipment including Iddexx and Abaxis laboratory suite, DR radiography and new radiology suite, im3 dental equipment & dental radiography, electrocautery, de Soutter orthopaedic equipment, rigid endoscopes, modern ultrasound, etc

CARNARVON, CORAL COAST - SMALL ANIMAL
- Recently Graduated as a Vet or graduating in 2022?
- Got a 'have a go' attitude?
- Has your ‘dream job’ not quite been the start you hoped for or have you heard the horror stories that some new grads have had to endure?
Hey there I'm Dr Emma...
Being a Vet has been a 16-year adventure for me! I started just like you, stars in my eyes and my sights set on that perfect start to my career. You know the one that promises all the support in the world, only to deliver burn out and complete overwhelm.
So…
When I became a business owner 7 years ago, I made a vow that I would not allow another vet to have a start like my own.
And...
I'm excited to help another grad get their best start in 2022, or 2023 if you're still in your final year! I’ve been with Coral Coast Vets since the doors were opened way back in 2009. In 2015 I was given the opportunity to take the reins and made it my own!
Like many clinic owners I wanted to create a "lovely place to work"...
Where everyone enjoyed camaraderie and teamwork and enjoyed fulfilment from a job well done. When I say we are a great team, we really are. We have each other’s backs, and we cheer each other on. We celebrate our wins and our learns, both in and out of the clinic. We also love the feeling of becoming part of the extended family of our clients. It’s a really special part of regional practice.
So, What's It Like To Be A Grad With Us...?
I just love watching a new Graduate develop professionally and personally...
To watch them spread their wings as their confidence grows just never gets old!
I could tell you how amazing we are but it's better to hear what our current recent Grad has to say..
‘I started at Coral Coast Veterinary Hospital as a new graduate in 2021 and could not have asked for a more supportive and exciting environment to begin my veterinary career. Dr Emma is a fantastic boss who understands the needs of a new graduate and is always willing to provide support and guidance in whatever capacity you may need.I’m more than willing to discuss my experiences with anyone interested in this opportunity’
Dr Georgia Taylor AnSc (Hons) Bsc DVM
"Dr Emma, It Sounds Good But..."
"Carnarvon is in the middle of nowhere..."
It is, kinda! A 2 hour flight has you back in the hustle and bustle of Perth. We take extra time to ensure your relocation is a smooth experience! If you like a laid-back outdoor lifestyle at the gateway to the Ningaloo reef whilst being immersed in the Gascoyne food bowl, then you will love it! Not to mention you will get experience that 'big city' clinics never see.
Please click here to see photos!
"I'm worried I will be left on my own!"
Put simply... No! You will be supported every step of the way. We have a detailed 6-month induction program that allows you to be challenged in a safe and secure environment. No question is ever too silly, and you will never be made to feel that way.
"What sort of experience will I get?"
As a regional small animal GP, the case load can be like a 'hamburger with the lot'...This means you will get to observe and play a role in a wide variety of cases, without the overwhelm of ‘going it alone’.
"Dr Emma, I Am Keen To Know More..."
If you have the passion, enthusiasm and excitement to learn and grow with us then I would love to chat...
If it is an opportunity that is worth exploring further for both of us, then I'm sure we'll both know it!
Email me at: emma@coralcoastvet.com.au to make a time!

We are a forward thinking practice that believes our greatest asset is our team and if we look after and invest in our team, the team will be able to provide the best care to our clients' patients.
We have only ever advertised for this position once before.
Note from our Veterinarian – Dr Jaime,
I started working for MHVC nearly 4 years ago as a recent graduate, following 2 internships in referral practice. It was my first experience in general practice, and how lucky I was to have such an amazing clinic and team to nurture me into the vet I am today! The team was extremely supportive and helped grow my client communication and practical skillset enormously. We are lucky to be regional, therefore receiving a high and varied caseload, so you will never be bored. I had the opportunity during my employment to sit my memberships in small animal surgery, further growing the practice into one with surgical focus, including complex soft tissue and some orthopaedics. We would love to have someone join us with a keen interest in surgery, or to compliment the team by bringing further medical or dental skills. A love for your clients is a must here, as we are a very bonded clinic. Our clients are very loyal and caring, which always makes me leave for the day with a sense of fulfilment. MHVC has been an amazing place to work over the last few years, and we would love to have another passionate vet join us to grow and develop our team.
We are expanding! :)
An exciting and rare opportunity has become available for a friendly, professional and enthusiastic veterinarian to be part of our wonderful team.
We are an independent family-owned clinic where best practices are maintained and every decision is made with the client and their pets best interest at heart.
You will enjoy a supportive management and nursing team providing a positive and enjoyable workplace.
We understand the importance of a good work-life balance and we work hard to achieve this. There are no on-call duties, we close at 2pm on Saturdays, closed Sundays and have very limited sole charge work.
We understand in order to provide the best care for our patients you require the equipment to perform effectively.
We have a completely equipped surgery suite including Stryker orthopaedic drill set, electrocautery unit and Surgivet anaesthetic monitoring. Complementing the surgery suite the clinic also has a Digital x-ray, Mylab ultrasound, integrated Vetscan VS2 and Haematology REM blood analyser, brand new MACH Theatre, Procedure and examination lights and an im3 dental suite.
