Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital located in Congupna, (Shepparton), Victoria, Australia has an opportunity for an Intern Veterinarian to join our specialist equine practice, commencing immediately for a negotiable term.

The rotating internship programme at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital has been running for many years and has provided many graduates with significant exposure, training and experience in all areas of equine internal medicine, surgery and reproduction. 

The hospital caseload is busy and diverse, with an equal mix of referral and first opinion cases.  During the season, the hospital admits approximately 100 sick neonates for intensive care. Interns participate in a rotating roster through surgery, outpatients, reproduction, medicine, anaesthesia and night duty, working under specialists in equine surgery, equine reproduction and internal medicine, and their associated residents.

Internship in Small Animal Surgery

The Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency (CARE) is seeking applicants for its surgical internship program.

About CARE

CARE is a multidisciplinary veterinary specialist and emergency hospital in Collingwood, centrally located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD. It is privately-owned and has an expanding list of specialists in Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine and Surgery, as well as an excellent, experienced team of emergency veterinarians, nurses, and support staff. The activities of the hospital are strongly focused on achieving the ultimate standard of patient care and establishing excellent relationships with our referring veterinarians and clients. In the same way, we pride ourselves on having a cohesive and friendly, team-oriented working environment.

CARE is well-equipped, including for example: digital radiography, Phillips Affiniti and POC ultrasound machines, CT, EMG, Surgivet multi-parameter monitors, ventilators, Radiometer blood gas machine, and Idexx in-house laboratory suite, fluoroscopy with digital subtraction angiography and regular offsite MRI access. Beyond this, we are committed to the continued evolution of the facility and its instrumentation to ensure that contemporary and newly developed techniques and practices are available for our patients.

The Surgery Department enjoys a busy caseload that includes advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeries, neurosurgery, oncologic surgery, and minimally invasive and interventional radiologic procedures. It is staffed by two specialist surgeons, Drs Guy Yates and Brenton Chambers; a surgical registrar, Dr Jiaying Ng and surgical resident, Dr Teng Khoo; who are strongly supported by a team of highly qualified, experienced and dedicated surgical nurses. The team has a cooperative, thoughtful approach that benefits from its integration with the other sections of the hospital.

About the Surgery Internship

This internship program serves as an introduction to specialist surgical practice and creates a solid foundation for the pursuit of further training in surgery. Nearly all previous interns in this position have progressed to residency or other academic surgical positions. It is intended to provide exposure to a varied surgical caseload, perspective on surgical training and practice, and an emphasis on the value of the available literature in everyday surgical decision-making.

The program is full-time, has a fixed-term of 12-months and is exclusively surgical, although a preparedness to assist and integrate with the other sections of the hospital would be expected. Are you keen on emergency and critical care, late nights, and working in a high-energy environment with a fantastic team? The Animal Referral Hospital is pleased to offer a 12-month internship in ECC starting January 2021. The position would suit an energetic, motivated individual with a minimum of 12 months’ experience, although new graduates with excellent communication skills and problem-solving ability will be considered.

We believe our team is our best asset. Under the mentorship of our ECC Specialist and 6 other senior emergency vets who have achieved MANZCVS, and/or residency training, the ECC Intern will rotate through daytime shifts with the specialists, as well as night-time and weekend shifts under the guidance of senior ECC clinicians. Four weeks annual leave, 1-week paid study leave, and a salary above the award is offered. Regular case discussion, in-house training and daily interactions with specialists in all departments at our hospital will enhance the learning experience during your time with us.

REC is a purely equine practice servicing a wide range of horses and ponies, from miniature to elite race and sport horses. Although we have a proud history and extensive experience servicing the Thoroughbred Racing industry, a wide array of breeds and conditions are treated daily providing the best possible surgical and medical care for the horses of NSW and beyond.

Our practice of registered equine specialist’s services the fields of surgery, medicine and anaesthesia. Our hospital caseload encompasses a combination of referral and primary accessions and our ambulatory stud medicine and reproduction rotations are carried out at Illawarra Equine Centre and Southern Highlands Equine Centre.

The successful applicants will receive experience in surgery, anaesthesia, medicine, sports medicine/rehabilitation, ophthalmology, reproduction (including ET, frozen and chilled semen) and imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, dynamic respiratory endoscopy and nuclear medicine). The applicants will be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cases seen on rotation including routine ambulatory, racetrack and supervised after hours work.

The AEC’s Graduate Development Program is a 2-year intensive internship program designed to cultivate excellence in all aspects of emergency and critical care medicine and surgery.

The GDP is conducted in a supportive and encouraging environment, with clinical supervision and mentorship provided by Membership qualified and experienced emergency and critical care veterinarians.  

The program also involves structured didactic teaching, including practical classes, and training with specialists in the related disciplines of soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, radiology and clinical pathology. The program will also allow the graduate to gain experience in clinical research, scientific presentation and scientific manuscript preparation. The program will meet all internship requirements for those individuals wishing to pursue residency training and would also be greatly beneficial for any graduate wishing to accelerate their learning curve.

The Cat Clinic is offering an internship in Feline Medicine & Feline Surgery. Interns will be exposed to all aspects of feline medicine (including oncology, diagnostic imaging, cardiology, emergency and critical care) and surgery.

The Clinics, located in Brisbane (Mt Gravatt, Paddington and Clayfield) have all the expected equipment (fully digital x-ray, 16 slice CT, video endoscopy, latest Philips ultrasound, comprehensive in-house pathology, radio-iodine facility etc). The Clinic has a large general practice and specialist feline medicine service. A large case load ensures enormous learning opportunities and requires commitment, dedication and enthusiasm. Good communication skills and a genuine love of cats are considered essential. Interns share on-call duties with on-site residence expected when on duty.

We are now taking applications for the next intake of our Graduate Development Program. This is a 24-month immersion program in small animal emergency and critical care medicine paving the way for a residency, graduate degree study or entry into a high-quality small animal veterinary practice.  The program will provide you with the training and the clinical case exposure to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in small animal emergency and critical care. The position is suitable for a recent graduate or a new graduate of exceptional standards and will commence early 2021. 

The centre is equipped with gold star equipment including; digital radiographs, in house bloods (CBC, biochemistry, EPOC, PT/APTT), a MyLAB30 gold ultrasound and a VIVID3 cardiac ultrasound, three ventilators including a Puritan Bennet, humidicribs, an oxygen generator, a spacious surgery, a defibrillator and Surgivet, DASH and Cardell monitors.  Our patients are frequently insured and willing to pursue the gold standard of treatment. We have an extensive library of protocols to support you, however critical & lateral thinking and treating each case individually is highly encouraged. We have visiting cardiologists, internal medicine ultrasonographers and a close relationship with both surgical and internal medicine specialists.

The role

The surgery team is seeking a motivated and passionate veterinarian to be our next surgical intern, based at the Glen Waverley hospital. The Internship:

Following the success of our ongoing Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Internship, the team is excited to be offering a second Internship for the next enthusiastic candidate. As our ECC Intern, you will be an integral part of the team under the watchful guidance of our 3 American Diplomat Specialists in ECC.

The internship will involve a rotating roster of shifts during days, evenings, nights, and weekends, giving you exposure to a wide variety of interesting cases. You will have the opportunity for both independent case management (80%) as well as assisting Specialists in their management of critical cases all the while working in a supportive environment.

We have structured our Internship to prepare you to be successful and confident to take the next step into a residency programme in ECC. The programme is of 12 months’ duration and can include participation in a clinical research project, presenting at a conference or publishing if of interest to the candidate.
