Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Internship – 12-month position
The Animal Referral Hospital – Essendon Fields, VIC

Are you keen on emergency and critical care, late nights, and working in a high-energy environment with a fantastic team? The Animal Referral Hospital is pleased to offer a 12-month internship in ECC starting January 2021. The position would suit an energetic, motivated individual with a minimum of 12 months’ experience, although new graduates with excellent communication skills and problem-solving ability will be considered.

We believe our team is our best asset. Under the mentorship of our ECC Specialist and 6 other senior emergency vets who have achieved MANZCVS, and/or residency training, the ECC Intern will rotate through daytime shifts with the specialists, as well as night-time and weekend shifts under the guidance of senior ECC clinicians. Four weeks annual leave, 1-week paid study leave, and a salary above the award is offered. Regular case discussion, in-house training and daily interactions with specialists in all departments at our hospital will enhance the learning experience during your time with us.

The Cat Clinic is offering an internship in Feline Medicine & Feline Surgery. Interns will be exposed to all aspects of feline medicine (including oncology, diagnostic imaging, cardiology, emergency and critical care) and surgery.

The Clinics, located in Brisbane (Mt Gravatt, Paddington and Clayfield) have all the expected equipment (fully digital x-ray, 16 slice CT, video endoscopy, latest Philips ultrasound, comprehensive in-house pathology, radio-iodine facility etc). The Clinic has a large general practice and specialist feline medicine service. A large case load ensures enormous learning opportunities and requires commitment, dedication and enthusiasm. Good communication skills and a genuine love of cats are considered essential. Interns share on-call duties with on-site residence expected when on duty.

GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

AEC Moorabbin is a purpose built, 24-hour Emergency Centre. We have an outstanding team of Vets and Nurses who are knowledgeable, friendly and highly supportive. We practice an exceptionally high standard of care for all our patients.

We are now taking applications for the next intake of our Graduate Development Program. This is a 24-month immersion program in small animal emergency and critical care medicine paving the way for a residency, graduate degree study or entry into a high-quality small animal veterinary practice.  The program will provide you with the training and the clinical case exposure to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in small animal emergency and critical care. The position is suitable for a recent graduate or a new graduate of exceptional standards and will commence early 2021. 

The centre is equipped with gold star equipment including; digital radiographs, in house bloods (CBC, biochemistry, EPOC, PT/APTT), a MyLAB30 gold ultrasound and a VIVID3 cardiac ultrasound, three ventilators including a Puritan Bennet, humidicribs, an oxygen generator, a spacious surgery, a defibrillator and Surgivet, DASH and Cardell monitors.  Our patients are frequently insured and willing to pursue the gold standard of treatment. We have an extensive library of protocols to support you, however critical & lateral thinking and treating each case individually is highly encouraged. We have visiting cardiologists, internal medicine ultrasonographers and a close relationship with both surgical and internal medicine specialists.

We will provide you with five weeks annual leave, one-week CE leave, 10 days personal leave, financial CE support, VIN & Plumb online membership.  Clinical shifts are a combination of days, nights, weekdays, weekends and public holidays.

Training

An internship at AES provides an opportunity for recent graduates to establish a career in the highly sought-after area of emergency critical care medicine & surgery under the guidance of experienced clinicians trained in this area. The objectives of the program are to train individuals to be outstanding emergency veterinarians with a focus on clinical excellence. Friendly and helpful support and training is provided with the expectation that candidates will have the opportunity to graduate to become full time members of the AES veterinary team after completion of the internship.

The first 6 months of the internship will be directly mentored by the Veterinary Manager and will have the support of senior clinicians any time you’re on shift. Training will involve attending consultations and assisting with diagnostic investigations, surgical procedures, client communication and maintenance of high-quality medical records. Interns will then progress to taking primary case management under supervision allowing them to develop the confidence and clinical skill needed in this challenging field of veterinary medicine.

Animal Emergency Service is dedicated to continuing education, and as such, have developed our own in-house programs for our veterinary teams. You will be expected to partake in our ‘Accelerate’ program, which is focused on recent graduates. Our goal is to help you attain a fulfilling career!

Veterinary Specialist Services

Veterinary Specialist Services is a group of referral hospitals, dedicated to providing the best possible care to our patients, clients and referring veterinarians. Established in 2000, VSS now has three, fully equipped hospitals located at Underwood, Jindalee and Carrara.

The role

We are offering a 12-month internship commencing on the 11th of January 2021.

Interns will rotate through the referral services including Surgery and Internal Medicine. This is a fulltime training position which will prepare successful interns to further their career whether this be in general practice or advanced and specialist small animal practice.  Please note we may also advertise separately for internships within a specific discipline.

The opportunity to spend time in the disciplines of Dermatology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dentistry, and Animal Physiotherapy is also available. 

Participation in clinical rounds, medical and surgical journal clubs, presentation at seminars and the preparation of a paper for publication is expected of the successful candidates.

The person

Both new and recent graduates with some experience and demonstrated genuine interest in Small Animal clinical practice are invited to apply.

Dr. Simon Kudnig, who is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVSc), a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Dip ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology, is the head of the surgery department. We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery including advanced surgical oncologic procedures. We are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation, TPLO, Kyon equipment (Pauls, THR), Ligasure, plating systems, neurosurgery equipment, as well as a CT scanner and MRI unit on-site.

About the position

The Surgery department is staffed by 2 specialist surgeons (Dr. Simon Kudnig and Dr. Tania Shaw), a surgical intern, and a team of surgical nurses. The surgical intern is expected to become competent in assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management, patient discharges and medical records. The intern will also be trained and be expected to become competent in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The intern will also be involved in the anaesthesia of patients, as well as the post-operative care of patients and transfer of patients to the intensive care unit. Assistance in preparation for membership of the ANZCVS will be offered and interns will be encouraged to seek residency training following the completion of the internship and will be assisted in such training opportunities.

Requirements
