ALBURY - SMALL ANIMAL SURGICAL VACANCY New Position

Veterinary small animal surgical training position

Do you have a love for surgery but wish you had more opportunities and support to develop your skill set?
Do you have memberships in surgery, or would you like to achieve surgical memberships with excellent mentorship?

Townsend Veterinary Clinic is a small animal hospital based in the beautiful regional centre of Albury, on the border of New South Wales and Victoria. Our passion for what we do, combined with excellent customer service has seen us take out the Start Up Superstar award at the NSW State Business Awards. Thanks only to word of mouth referrals, we are growing and are needing to expand our veterinary team.

The successful candidate is a veterinarian with surgical memberships or an experienced veterinarian with the desire to achieve surgical memberships through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. The position will primarily involve both routine and advanced surgeries and surgical consultations. The advanced procedures will be performed with guidance and mentorship from Dr. Peter Young BVSc (Honours) MANZCVS (Small Animal Surgery).

Peter is a very experienced veterinarian who is a permanent member of staff with a special interest in surgery and has a love for teaching. Peter has worked as a lecturer, researcher and referral surgeon at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. He has also been an examiner for veterinarians undertaking membership exams through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. Peter has mentored three veterinarians to their surgical memberships over his career.

Examples of advanced surgeries regularly performed at our clinic include complicated abdominal surgeries, reconstructive surgeries, orthopaedics (fracture repairs, cruciate surgeries - extracapsular and osteotomy techniques, patella surgery, JPS etc.), and everything in between (TECABOs, perineal hernias, perineal urethrostomies, BOAS surgery, gastropexies etc.). A proportion of our case load is referred from other local and regional practices. We regularly (average once a month) have specialist surgeon Dr. Adrian Wallace perform surgeries at our clinic and there is the opportunity to assist Dr. Wallace in theatre with cases such as double pelvic osteotomies, ectopic ureters, elbow arthroscopy, TPLOs and more!

The successful candidate will have the support of an experienced and collaborative veterinary team, working alongside colleagues with further training and qualifications in emergency and critical care (ANZCVS), anaesthesia and analgesia, rehabilitation and ultrasound. Our nurses are fully qualified, registered, and experienced, and their skills are well-utilised meaning that the vets can focus on the veterinary medicine and surgery and have time to research cases. The entire veterinary team strives for gold standard medicine, and we have similar high ethical standards towards our patients and clients. We are a close-knit team and regularly socialise together outside of work and we have a relaxed and positive culture at the clinic.

The clinic is well-equipped and spacious with new advanced equipment including: digital radiography including dental radiography (standard for all dental procedures); ultrasound; advanced anaesthesia monitoring including blood pressure, ECG, and end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring; Tonopen for intraocular pressure measurement; in-house lab with biochemistry, PT/APTT, blood gases and electrolytes; separate sterile surgical theatre with suction, cautery and Bair huggers, and extensive instrumentation. IV fluids are standard with all procedures. We have a brand-new ISFM Gold accredited feline-only clinic on the second level of the hospital, which contains a feline-friendly ward, treatment area and dedicated surgical theatre.

What about the location? The border North East region is absolutely stunning. The clinic is walking distance to the beautiful Murray River and in summer we enjoy a float down the river, or a game of beach-volleyball at the courts down the road. There are fantastic restaurants, cafes and wineries. We are close to the snow, as well as the beautiful towns of Beechworth, Rutherglen and Bright. There are brilliant schools and great transportation options with Albury Airport only a few minutes away and an excellent V-line train service, making trips to Melbourne a breeze.

We are also extremely fortunate to have a local emergency centre (River Country Animal Emergency Centre) which is open every night and 24hrs through the weekend and on public holidays, meaning that there are NO on-call requirements!

If this sounds like the right position for you but you’d like to know more about the perks of the job and the lifestyle to expect in this beautiful region, please feel free to contact us for a chat (and even better still, come up and meet us and have a tour and a meal at the pub).

If you would like to apply for this position, please email a cover letter and CV to Dr. Shelley Wiltshire BVSc (Hons) MANZCVS (ECC) at shelley@townsendvets.com.au or call (02) 6046 9846.
