The Position:

We have an exciting opportunity  for a Small Animal Internal Medicine Internship. The successful applicants will be required to assist the medicine specialists to ensure that patients and clients get the best veterinary care possible. This position is also a structured learning opportunity and will allow access to a varied case load with the support of highly qualified professionals.

This 12 month, full-time position will involve being mentored by a large team of medical specialists. You will contribute to publications of the service and conduct a brief clinical research project for publication. We are proud to say our Internal Medicine Interns go on to be offered specialist training opportunities including residencies at SASH or positions at internationally acclaimed universities.

A unique opportunity exists for Veterinarians (recently graduated - with or without experience) seeking a change in direction or to further progress their career.

We are offering a 12 month fixed term opportunity to experience a Rotating Internship in a multi-disciplinary referral hospital and ECC. The rotating internship will expose you to 3 months (in 4 week rotations) in the following Departments:

The internship is designed and overseen by our team of specialists and provides constant exposure to referral level Emergency and Critical Care, Medicine, Surgery, Neurology and Advanced Imaging procedures, including MRI.

The interns will be scheduled to work a flexible roster based on the needs of each Department, which can include a mix of day and night shifts, weekend work and some public holidays. Working under supervision, there will be the opportunity to engage directly with the specialists. Journal review and the writing of papers will be encouraged and supported as part of further learning.

The Position
The position will see the successful candidate working closely with our Practice Principal, Dr Pauline Gaven on our Ophthalmology caseload across our Small Animal and (if inclined), Equine Units. Cases originate through primary accession, internal referral and external referral.

The successful candidate will perform their clinical duties in assisting and receiving Ophthalmology cases and managing them under the direction of our Ophthalmology Veterinarian. The clinician will have case-based interactions with our team across a wide field of professional interests including Surgery, Reproduction, Dentistry, Small Animal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care, Behaviour, Exotics and Ultrasound.

The clinician will be expected to work a mix of morning shifts (starting at 7am) and evening shifts (finishing at 8-9pm), 5 days a week. There will be no afterhours or overnights, but there is an expectation that the clinician is available to be on-call on some weekends to attend to the Ophthalmology Hospitalised patients as required on a case by case basis.

This position would suit a conscientious Veterinarian with >2-3 years of clinical experience who has an interest in Ophthalmology.

CAMPERDOWN, INNER WESTERN SYDNEY - FULL TIME ECC INTERNSHIP New Position

Job title: Staff Veterinarian - Emergency and Critical Care Specialty Internship

About the opportunity

The Emergency and Critical Care Specialty Internship position operates within the Faculty of Science’s veterinary teaching hospital in Camperdown. The faculty provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in veterinary and associated disciplines. The teaching hospital provides the clinical learning experience for veterinary students and staff engaged in professional training programs. The hospital is a commercial centre and provides a range of veterinary services to the public.

The internship is designed to further develop the appointee’s skills in emergency and critical care, with a goal of preparing appointees for a future residency in the specialty as well as sitting the ANZCVS membership exam. Interns will spend their time on the emergency and critical care service, rotating through days, evening, overnights and weekends. Weekday daytime rotations will involve direct oversight by an emergency and critical care specialist, while other shifts may have indirect mentoring by a criticalist or direct mentoring from an ECC resident.

Interns will participate in pathophysiology rounds and journal club designed for the residency program as part of their general duties. The specialty internship is directly supported by 2 emergency and critical care specialists and three ECC residents. Interns will provide primary care for patients presenting through the emergency and critical care service and will be involved with supervising and assessing final year students during their rotation on the service.

The Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) is a well-established group of specialist veterinary hospitals. The role

12-month Specialty Training

The Specialty Training Program with a Veterinary Education Emphasis is a year‐long training program in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University in Western Australia. The training program offers experience in a specialty discipline with an emphasis on veterinary education through concurrent enrolment in a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education (G1025).

This position would suit a veterinary graduate with some experience, interested in university training or pursuing a residency. It offers an excellent opportunity to prepare for Membership Examinations by the ANZCVS. Exceptional new graduates will be considered. A taxable stipend of $30,000 is offered for enrolment in G1025.

The Opportunity:

The teaching hospital provides clinical learning experience for veterinary students and staff engaged in professional training programs as well as being a commercial centre and providing a range of veterinary services to the public.

The rotating internship is designed to further develop your skills in a range of disciplines, with a goal of preparing you for a future residency. If successful, you will spend approximately 60% of your clinical rotations with the emergency and critical care service and will have sole case responsibility after hours. The remaining time will be divided among anaesthesia, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery with varying levels of case responsibility as well as opportunities to learn from registered specialists in multiple fields.

Interns will participate in weekly morbidity and mortality rounds, journal club, and didactic seminars and will be expected to produce a presentation for grand rounds. Interns will be involved with supervising and assessing final year students during their rotations on all services.

Training
An internship at AES provides an opportunity for recent graduates to establish a career in the highly sought-after area of emergency critical care medicine & surgery under the guidance of experienced clinicians trained in this area. The objectives of the program are to train individuals to be outstanding emergency veterinarians with a focus on clinical excellence. Friendly and helpful support and training is provided with the expectation that candidates will have the opportunity to graduate to become full time members of the AES veterinary team after completion of the internship.

The first 6 months of the internship will be directly mentored by the Veterinary Manager and will have the support of senior clinicians any time you’re on shift. Training will involve attending consultations and assisting with diagnostic investigations, surgical procedures, client communication and maintenance of high-quality medical records. Interns will then progress to taking primary case management under supervision allowing them to develop the confidence and clinical skill needed in this challenging field of veterinary medicine.

Animal Emergency Service is dedicated to continuing education, and as such, have developed our own in-house programs for our veterinary teams. You will be expected to partake in our ‘Accelerate’ program, which is focused on recent graduates. Our goal is to help you attain a fulfilling career!
