The role

We are offering a 12-month Vet Tech Internship commencing in January 2020 at our Underwood Hospital. The successful Vet Tech graduate will rotate through the specific fields of Surgery and Internal Medicine. This is a full time training position which will create the opportunity for the Intern to gain real life experience, to enhance and hone their skills and knowledge and to further their careers in Veterinary Nursing.

Our learning program includes, but is not limited to, urinary catheter care, blood collection, clinical pathology, nutrition, restraining techniques, surgical patient preparation, surgical anaesthesia. Medical procedures such as MRI, advanced radiology, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, endoscopy and CT.

All of this and more is delivered in our purpose-built facilities, in a fully supported environment by our most senior nurses and experienced Veterinary Specialists, with a focus on Gold standard excellence in nursing and patient care.

The person

Remuneration

We all contribute to client communication, ordering/stock control, admit and discharge, surgical prep and monitoring, reporting to the vets on patient progress, invoicing and everything in-between.

In saying all of that, we are a very light-hearted team and nothing is too hard, too much or too big an issue. We have very approachable management and discuss all changes and ideas as a team.

We are a small team consisting of two vets, Dr Chris Pretorius who is the owner/director and Dr Sammy Brown a 2017 graduate from JCU. We have a total of 5 nurses consisting of four experienced nurses and one trainee.

We are a close team and regularly catch up outside of work for drinks and exploring what Far North Queensland has to offer. We are all quite active and enjoy living a full lifestyle.

Our main focus is customer service and catering to our clients. We have a very practical approach and our clients are a part of our big family rather than just a number.

We offer a huge variety of services including general surgery, dentals, radiology, ultrasound and referral options, a variety of soft tissue surgery such as soft palate/nares and anal gland resection, and a large variety of orthopaedic surgeries such as TTA’s, FHO, Patella and fracture repair.

We do a lot of work with rescue and rehoming groups. We have separate isolation, dog and cat wards, theatre and digital x-ray, dental and knockdown areas and a recovery area.
