Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency, Collingwood, Melbourne (posted 6th May) Surgery Nurse
Small Animal Surgery Nurse
- Permanent full-time or part-time.
- Generous remuneration package.
- Well-equipped hospital with modern facilities.
- Industry leading team based in the vibrant heart of Melbourne.
The Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency (CARE) is looking for an enthusiastic and conscientious nurse to become part of a dynamic, progressive team of nurses and surgeons within its surgical department.
About CARE
CARE is a busy, privately-owned, multi-specialist veterinary hospital located in Collingwood, on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. It evolved from an ardent intention to provide the highest standards of patient care in a cooperative and cohesive, team-oriented environment that respects, supports and encourages the personal balance and professional development of its staff. This focus has fostered the development of excellent relationships within our staff, and with our referring veterinarians and clients. The hospital is staffed by an outstanding team of emergency veterinarians and nurses, working alongside specialists in internal medicine, emergency and critical care, and surgery.
The centre is very well equipped with imaging (Siemens 16-slice CT, digital radiography, digital subtraction fluoroscopy, Phillips affinity and POC ultrasound machines, regular off-site access to 3T MRI imaging), critical care (6 new Menios oxygen cages, new Getinge Servo-u ventilator and newly created critical care suite), laboratory (Radiometer blood-gas machine, IDEXX Procyte haematology, Catalyst biochemistry and coagulation machines) and other equipment such as Olympus endoscopy and advanced anaesthetic monitoring.
The Position
The Surgery Department at CARE is staffed by three specialist surgeons and one final-year resident, supported by a dedicated and cohesive team of experienced nurses. The department enjoys a consistent and varied caseload, operating at the highest level across the spectrum of soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics and neurosurgery. The surgical team takes pride in the standard of patient care, and case outcomes, rather than caseload and is strongly focused on evidence-based practice and a cooperative, collegiate, and multidisciplinary approach to ensure best practice.
This role involves responsibility for the care of hospitalized patients of the surgery department, as well as assistance with their anaesthetic management, specialized diagnostic tests, preparation for surgery and theatre nursing. In addition, there is a need for regular, reliable, and detailed communication within the department, across departments of the hospital, and with clients and referring veterinarians.
The role is preferably full-time, but with an emphasis on finding the right person rather than the specific terms. It is important that the successful applicant embraces our core values, integrates well, and values the pursuit of excellence in client and patient care. They will be experienced, motivated, conscientious, and effective in their written and verbal communication with clients, referring veterinarians and other hospital staff.
CARE surgery nurses are remunerated at a rate ranging from $30 - 35 per hour, commensurate with skills and experience. Award rates apply for hours worked overtime and call-ins.
About You
The ideal candidate is professional, genuine, and personable, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills. An ability to adapt to changing circumstances and manage a variety of challenges that you may be presented with would be an advantage.
Certificate IV in nursing (or equivalent qualification) is a prerequisite foundation. Nursing experience in a multi-specialist facility is considered beneficial, but is not critical and is readily overshadowed by genuine enthusiasm and a friendly, team-oriented personality.
Life at CARE
The successful candidate will enjoy:
- Membership of a friendly, supportive, and highly productive team of nurses and veterinarians within the Surgery Department, and more broadly, within CARE.
- Generous remuneration as detailed above.
- Exposure to an exciting and varied caseload in an environment committed to achieving the best patient outcomes with the resources and equipment to achieve them.
- Immersion in a workplace culture that encourages, values, and makes provision for continuing professional development.
- Relocation assistance and the potential for Visa sponsorship for international candidates.
- A workplace that is focused on employee wellbeing, professional satisfaction, and the sustainability of veterinary work.
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), providing free and confidential counselling on issues of work, money, family, health, and everything in between.
- Great staff amenities which include complimentary snacks, beverages, espresso coffee, and fresh fruit delivered weekly.
- Generous discounts on a range of hospital products and services.
- An easy commute to work, owing to our close proximity to multimodal public transport and major arterial freeways. Secure off-street staff car parking is available.
- A centrally located workplace in one of Melbourne's most exciting lifestyle precincts.
How to Apply
Applications and enquiries should be directed to Brooke Crockford via careers@carevet.com.au Applications should include a cover letter outlining your suitability and enthusiasm for the position, and a current CV (including contact details for three references).

Aspendale Gardens Veterinary Hospital, Southeast Melbourne (posted 2nd May)
Full time, experienced veterinary nurse opportunity!
We are looking for someone full time, however a part time position would be considered for the right person.
Experience is essential.
We love training new nurses, however we currently have some trainees so are looking for someone with at least 2 years of clinical experience. Certificate IV in vet nursing is preferred, however not necessarily essential.
A bit about us…
We are an independently owned small animal clinic.
The Aspendale Gardens Vet Hospital has been around for many decades as an average small animal clinic.
Then Dr Laura bought the practice 7 years ago!
Back then…
It was a run down, single vet practice and to the people who worked there, it was just a job. They weren’t supported, they weren’t even told the practice was being sold.
Fast forward 7 years…
It is a completely different place! There’s now a team of 4 vets, 9 nurses and 2 kennel hands.
We are a caring workplace with a very dedicated team. We all strive to do our best and to provide the best possible care for our patients. Every team member is valued and everyone has a voice in making sure we maintain our high standards of care and keep the workplace a happy place to be. As we keep growing, we are looking for another nurse to join our amazing team.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone special, someone dedicated who really cares about animals and making their lives better. Someone who can communicate well, who does nursing because they love it and are passionate about it.
If you used to have that spark and that passion, yet have lost it along the way in a workplace that doesn’t appreciate you, then get in touch and we’ll see if that spark is still there.
We want someone who can work well independently and shows initiative, yet can also work really well with others. We are a very busy clinic, so you need to be prepared to work hard and manage your time well.
What the staff say:
“What I like about working at AGVH is the people. I was nervous about starting but was instantly made to feel welcomed. Everyone was kind and respectful towards me. They were always happy to help me when I needed and always made me feel like an equal. Working with people like this is what makes the job enjoyable for me.” Lauren, kennel hand at AGVH.
“It’s great to work with a supportive team of vets and nurses that can help you expand your nursing skills in all areas and allow you to be independent as well. A fantastic boss who is open to new ideas. The communication at the clinic is awesome and a lunch and learn is always good! The clients are lovely too.” Vanessa, vet nurse at AGVH.
About the role:
The role will involve being on the Saturday roster, this would usually be 1:3. Work hours are between 8am-6:30pm weekdays and 8am-2pm on Saturdays. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Find out more about us on our website www.aspendalegardensvet.com.au or
If you are looking for a change, or just trying to find a more supportive practice where you are valued and can extend your nursing skills, then please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
Please email your resume and cover letter to Dr Laura Hook at jobs@agvh.com.au. Please include in your cover letter what you value about being a vet nurse and where you see yourself in 5 years’ time. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call on 9587 4599.
