Hours

You would be working a 76 hour fortnight with either every fourth weekend or every second Saturday. The work

You will carry out a variety of both surgical nursing, consulting nursing and reception duties including but not limited to front of house customer service; placing catheters, blood collection and bandaging; hospital admission and discharge; general anaesthetic patient monitoring and performing dental cleaning, including digital dental radiology; running in-house pathology. We also value team consulting where you will work closely with your veterinarian in the consult room as well as being heavily involved in client education especially with regards to preventative healthcare for puppies and kittens.

With team consulting you’ll need the skills to develop strong relationships with clients in a relaxed and comfortable way as well as getting on with your patients.

You’ll also experience some variety if working the occasional shift at our more intimate practice Ballam Park Veterinary Clinic, only 250 metres down the road, where you will have the opportunity to personally see to the entire journey of each patient throughout the day, from welcoming them at reception, assisting with handling and nursing them through any surgical procedures. Those who demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills should thrive in this position.

Your remuneration will be guided by the recommendations of the Animal Care and Veterinary Services Award. The
level of pay will be awarded based on your qualities and any experience that you may bring to the position.

Applications are now open for students to enrol in the February 2020 intake for ACM40418 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing qualification at Australian College of Applied Animal Studies (ACAAS). Prospective students for February 2020 intake need to be available for Tour and Interviews on either Monday 13th January or Thursday 16th January. If accepted, students need to attend an Induction/Enrolment day on Thursday 6th February, ready to commence on Monday 10th February.

Students DO NOT need to be working in a veterinary practice to apply for this course, however ACM40418 requires a pre-requisite for all applicants to have a minimum of Certificate II in Animal Studies. If the student has industry experience but no qualification, then a Pre-Requisite Assessment process can be completed through ACAAS.

Training takes place in a purpose built facility at Narre Warren North. Experience in nursing small animals is delivered at WoofPurNay Narre Warren North and for those wishing to do the Equine speciality, at South Eastern Equine Hospital. For those that want to enrol in the Equine Elective they will need to complete a pre-requisite process called  Recognition of  Prior Learning (RPL) in Horse Safety & Behaviour. The Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is completed over a two year period with students attending the College one day a week for the theory component and two mentoring sessions per fortnight, allowing students to be employed in casual /part-time positions.
