Beechworth is a well-preserved historical town located in the north-east of Victoria. Beechworth is famous for its major growth during the gold rush days of the mid-1850s. The town has re-invented itself and evolved into a popular tourist destination and growing wine-producing centre.
The gold rush boom left an impressive legacy of over 30 well preserved National Trust-listed buildings for today's visitors. Visit the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct and see the gaol that hosted bushranger Ned Kelly, the 1850s Telegraph Station and take a ghostly tour of the Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum.
Beechworth is located 284 km north-east of Melbourne and 48kms east of the city of Wangaratta and is the administrative centre for the area.
