- Opportunity to work with and learn from Specialists who inspire and train the next generation of veterinary leaders and engage with the school ranked #2 in Australia and #22nd globally, within a world class university.
The internship is designed to further develop your skills in a range of disciplines, with a goal of preparing you for a future residency (with a track record of high success rates into residencies, specialty internships and higher research programs). The program has recently been restructured, with approximately 50% of the time being spent in the referral services (surgery, internal medicine, anaesthesia and diagnostic imaging). The remaining 50% will be spent involved in provision of emergency care and support for the hospital. There is the scope to allocate up to three months of the internship to a particular area of interest as part of the referral services rotation period. This would be of benefit to those looking for more specialised training programs as a steppingstone for residency applications.
Interns will participate in most aspects of the teaching hospital activity (weekly morbidity and mortality rounds, journal club, and didactic seminars which are supervised by registered specialists). Support will be provided interns to undertake a research project with the opportunity to present this at the annual ANZCVS Science Week Conference. Interns will be involved with supporting and assessing final year students during their rotations on all services.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- provide excellent small animal services, under the supervision of registered specialists and senior veterinarians, in emergency, internal medicine, surgery, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia
- be engaged in the transformative education of future colleagues by providing opportunities for clinical teaching and support to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine final year students in the veterinary teaching hospital
- supervise and perform routine treatment of hospitalised patients.
The Sydney School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney is ranked 2nd in the Southern hemisphere and 22nd in the world among veterinary faculties (QS rankings 2022). The School of Veterinary Science educates students and conducts research in veterinary and related sciences.

MELBOURNE - 2025 ECC INTERNSHIP New Position
Elevate Your Veterinary Career with CARE's 2025 Emergency and Critical Care Internship!
Are you looking for an ECC Internship with great case exposure?
How about working alongside a Criticalist and 6 MANZCVS Veterinarian's ready to share their knowledge with you!
About the Internship
Join our high-volume Emergency and Critical Care Department, where we handle over 10,000 cases annually. This immersive 12-month internship is your gateway to mastering emergency and critical care, providing you with unparalleled clinical exposure, structured mentorship, and continuous education. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Christine Lovatt DACVECC and our team of 6 seasoned MANZCVS veterinarians, you will thrive in an environment committed to the highest standards of patient care.
This internship program is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in an intensely rewarding and fast paced discipline. It is focused on the provision of clinical exposure, structured mentorship and continuing education to engender confidence, develop clinical competence and serve as an introduction to the academic aspects of emergency and critical care. Beyond this, the role has the potential to open up further opportunities for career progression within the discipline.
The program has a fixed term of 12-months and is full-time. The majority of the year would be spent within the Emergency Department, but there would also be short rotations through other specialist departments.
Why Choose our ECC Internship?
The internship incorporates a range of benefits, which are included to capitalise on learning opportunities and optimise the value of the program for the intern, including:
- Early active participation in the ECC environment without the immediate pressure of primary case responsibility and a progressive transition to case responsibility based on readiness, and with the support and guidance of assigned mentors. Accordingly, all shifts will be rostered alongside another experienced ECC clinician – no sole charge is required at any time point during internship.
- Active involvement in daily ECC rounds and attendance at regular ECC tutorials
- Rotation through other departments of the hospital, specifically surgery and internal medicine, to further develop the intern's knowledge and skills in these areas. Additionally, there is access to, and considerable opportunity for, interaction with specialists in all departments on a daily basis. Beyond the obvious benefits, this also often allows for the follow-up of cases beyond the direct involvement of the Emergency Department.
- Mentorship by senior veterinarians, including multiple MANZCVS veterinarians and direct supervision and guidance from our DACVECC, Dr Christine Lovatt.
- Encouragement, support and provision for preparation for Membership examinations of the Australian and New Zealand College (if eligible) or other post-graduate training opportunities – we have had 4 veterinarians pass membership exams in the last 2 years!
- Consistent exposure to a large, diverse caseload supports familiarity with common presentations and ensures early application of knowledge.
- Professional and social interaction with the intern group within the hospital
- Competitive remuneration including 5 weeks of annual leave and 1 week of study leave for conference or externship attendance.
- Access to Greencross employee benefits, including National Symposium, other internal CE opportunities, vet registration payment, a CE allowance and RECOVER certification.

COLLINGWOOD, INNER MELBOURNE VIC - SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE INTERNSHIP 2024
Small Animal Medicine Internship 2024
The Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency is inviting applications for its internship program in small animal internal medicine.
About CARE
CARE is a multidisciplinary veterinary specialist and emergency hospital in Collingwood, centrally located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD. It has a strong and progressive team of specialists in small animal internal medicine and surgery, as well as an excellent, experienced team of emergency veterinarians, nurses and support staff.
Please click here to see photos!
The centre is very well equipped with imaging (Siemens 16-slice CT, digital radiography, digital subtraction fluoroscopy, Phillips affinity and POC ultrasound machines, consistent off-site access to 3T MRI imaging), critical care (6 new Menios oxygen cages, new Getinge Servo-u ventilator and newly created critical care suite), laboratory (Radiometer blood-gas machine, IDEXX Procyte haematology, Catalyst biochemistry and coagulation machines) and other equipment such as Olympus endoscopy and advanced anaesthetic monitoring.
About the Small Animal Medicine Internship
The internship positions at CARE were created with the aim of supporting the staff in the relevant department in their clinical duties but, most importantly, creating a genuine learning opportunity and a realistic introduction to the discipline.
The Internal Medicine Department at CARE enjoys a consistent and varied caseload that encompasses an interesting and broad range of clinical presentations. It is staffed by specialists Drs Linda Abraham, Karen Brenner, Sophie Haynes and ACVIM diplomat Dr Laura Lim; as well as a dedicated and cohesive team of experienced nurses. Together, they form a supportive, co-operative, and collaborative team, committed to optimising the outcome for our patients.
The intensive clinical exposure and active involvement with numerous specialists within both the primary and allied disciplines creates an ideal foundation for the pursuit of other formal or informal structured continuing education, including completion of examinations for Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. This position also serves as an opportunity to display the qualities that might be considered as criteria for selection for more advanced positions, such as residency training.
The internal medicine intern works closely with all members of the Internal Medicine team as well as staff within other departments of the hospital. The internship involves supervised clinical patient management, including in-patient care and assistance with procedures, as well as client and referring veterinarian communication and participation in rounds and regular journal club sessions. Mentoring and tutorials for those wishing to sit membership examinations is also offered.
About You
Internal medicine is a complex and challenging, yet intensely rewarding discipline. This role would suit a highly-motivated, hard-working and enthusiastic veterinarian with a minimum of 12 months of practical experience and a strong interest in internal medicine. Whilst it is not a pre-requisite, this position would suit someone considering developing their interest to the extent of specialist training in the discipline in future. It would be expected that the successful applicant would share the very strong patient and outcome focus, and ethos of exceptional quality of service and standard of care, that are defining and distinguishing characteristics of the internal medicine team at CARE.
Life at CARE
The successful candidate will enjoy:
- Membership of a friendly, supportive, and highly productive team of veterinarians and nurses within the Internal Medicine department, and more broadly, within CARE.
- Involvement in the management of an interesting, complex and varied caseload in an environment committed to achieving the best patient outcomes with the resources and equipment to achieve them.
- Immersion in a workplace culture that encourages, values, and makes provision for continuing professional development, with a strong emphasis on the educational and professional value of the internship program.
- Relocation assistance and the potential for Visa sponsorship for international candidates (must have veterinary degree that is recognized for registration in Victoria).
- A workplace that is focused on employee wellbeing, professional satisfaction, and the sustainability of veterinary work.
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program which is free confidential counselling sessions for you and immediate family members.
- An easy commute to work, owing to our close proximity to multimodal public transport and major arterial freeways. Secure off-street staff car parking is available.
- Centrally located workplace in one of Melbourne's most exciting lifestyle precincts.

New Position
EQUINE INTERNSHIP WITH MIXED ANIMAL COMPONENT
3 Positions starting in January 2025 at Anstead
We are currently recruiting new graduates for our 12-month internship position(s), commencing in January 2025. The internship is focused on developing new graduate veterinarians into confident mixed animal veterinarians. This is a rotating internship that is structured to give veterinarians a strong immersion in equine clinical practice whilst still enabling them to maintain their small animal and basic ruminant/camelid skills.
Interns will gain a broad range of clinical skills to prepare them for whichever road they choose post internship. Our intern graduates have gone on to pursue further internships in preparation for residencies, worked as mixed or equine veterinarians both locally and within Australia, and gone abroad to work in the UK. We also offer opportunities for intern graduates to stay on as associates at WestVETS. Our internship is an ideal transition for recent and new graduates who would like further experience before committing to pursue sole equine vs mixed practice or small animal.
A typical intern day starts at 7am with inpatient assessment and treatments. Hospital rounds occur at 8 AM with supervising clinicians, at which time daily patient plans are reassessed. Following rounds, interns will either assist with inpatient re-evaluation and procedures, outpatient, or ambulatory appointments (lameness evaluations, prepurchase evaluations, etc), emergencies, or general anaesthesia. Interns may also perform small animal consultations, with support as needed. The hospital sees an average of 1-2 primary opinion and referral emergencies per day in addition to scheduled appointments. WestVETS has a busy and varied caseload, including orthopaedic/sport medicine, lacerations, colics, pneumonias, diarrhoeas, neonates, and ophthalmology cases. The hospital also sees a number of small ruminant and camelid cases.
