MILE END, INNER WESTERN ADELAIDE, SA - SMALL ANIMAL, INTERNAL MEDICINE INTERNSHIP New Position

Internship in Small Animal Internal Medicine

The Austin Vet Specialists is growing. Having opened in May 2022, we see an ever-growing and exciting caseload of mostly small animals with the occasional exotic and zoo animal (think lion, capybara, orangutan). And now, Internal Medicine is coming to The Austin!

With the addition of Internal Medicine in April 2023, a unique opportunity exists for an Intern in Small Animal Internal Medicine to join our team.

The Internship:
The Internship is intended to provide the first step for a candidate with a strong interest in small animal internal medicine to start an academic, research and/or clinical career in small animal internal medicine (e.g. residency).

The Internship is a one-year fulltime (5 days per week) clinical position with a start date of April 2023. The goal is to give the Intern a deeper knowledge and gain experience within the field of small animal internal medicine. The Intern will be part of the newly formed Internal Medicine team, consisting of two board-certified internists (Natalie Watson and Narelle Brown). Additionally, they will be supported by a team of board-certified specialists in other disciplines and a full complement of highly capable nurses.

The daily work will revolve around the participation in the small animal internal medicine service as well as providing collaborative care of the patients in hospital. This will include supporting in-hospital patient care, the anaesthesia and preparation of internal medicine patients, and assisting with consults and discharges.

About The Austin:
We are young but ambitious with lofty standards. Our custom-built hospital (900m2) is designed around a synergistic approach to patient care. We work as one team to ensure outstanding patient care and exceptional customer service. We invest heavily in developing skills and knowledge aiming to open residency programmes in the near future.

Our hospital has all the instruments necessary to enable our medicine team to relish their chosen careers, and flourish. This includes a specifically designed medicine room with endoscopy, fluoroscopy, Holter monitoring, oncology services, all in-house blood gas/biochemistry/haematology machines, mechanical ventilation, invasive blood pressure monitoring and much more.

Our two internal medicine specialists (DipECVIM and DipACVIM) are supported by board-certified specialists in surgery (DipECVS) and diagnostic imaging (DipECVDI) including imaging resident, surgery interns, imaging intern and a team of amazing nurses. Our hospital includes a large reception with dedicated client care services, surgery wing, internal medicine wing, radiology wing (including new 64 slice CT scanner), large central treatment area with intensive care facilities, and much more including access to rehab/physio, 3T MRI scanner and PET-CT scanner.

About YOU – the awesome Intern:
We encourage applications from qualified vets with prior referral/specialist experience (e.g. rotating internship) as well as vets wanting to progress their career by moving into the referral/specialist setting. Needless to say, the Intern can expect full support and instruction (including journal club, film reading and other teaching), but initiative and desire to pursue further specialisation will be advantageous. Provisionally, internal medicine residency programmes are planned for the future (dependent on approvals).

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and expertise:

Small Animal Medicine Internship 2023

The Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency is inviting applications for its internship program in small animal internal medicine.

About CARE

CARE is a multidisciplinary veterinary specialist and emergency hospital in Collingwood, centrally located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD.  It is privately-owned and is fortunate to have a strong and progressive team of specialists in small animal internal medicine and surgery, as well as an excellent, experienced team of emergency veterinarians, nurses and support staff.

The centre is very well equipped with imaging (Siemens 16-slice CT, digital radiography, digital subtraction fluoroscopy, Phillips affinity and POC ultrasound machines, consistent off-site access to 3T MRI imaging), critical care (6 new Menios oxygen cages, new Getinge Servo-u ventilator and newly created critical care suite), laboratory (Radiometer blood-gas machine, IDEXX Procyte haematology, Catalyst biochemistry and coagulation machines) and other equipment such as Olympus endoscopy and advanced anaesthetic monitoring.

The Position

The subject-specific internship positions at CARE evolved from the symbiotic intentions of supporting the staff of the relevant department in their clinical duties and creating a genuine learning opportunity, and a realistic introduction to the discipline.  Intrinsic to the general process of internship, these positions also serve as an opportunity to display the qualities that might be considered as criteria for selection in the process of application for more advanced positions, such as residency training.

The intensive clinical exposure and active involvement with numerous specialists within both the primary and allied disciplines creates an ideal foundation for the pursuit of other formal or informal structured continuing education, including completion of examinations for Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.

The Internal Medicine Department at CARE enjoys a consistent and varied caseload that encompasses an interesting and broad range of clinical presentations.  It is staffed by specialists Drs Linda Abraham, Karen Brenner, Sophie Haynes and ACVIM diplomat, Dr Laura Lim; as well as a dedicated and cohesive team of experienced nurses.  Together, they form a supportive, co-operative, and collaborative team, committed to optimising the outcome for our patients by the considered application of available evidence and knowledge.

The internal medicine intern works closely with all members of the Internal Medicine team as well as staff within other departments of the hospital that contribute to the management of the department’s caseload.  The internship involves supervised clinical patient management, including in-patient care, assistance with, and co-ordination of procedures, client and referring veterinarian communication, including compilation of histories, as well as participation in rounds and regular journal club sessions. Mentoring and tutorials for those wishing to sit membership examinations is also offered.

About You

Internal medicine is a complex and challenging, yet intensely rewarding discipline. This role would suit a highly-motivated, hard-working and enthusiastic veterinarian with a minimum of 12 months of practical experience and a strong interest in internal medicine.  Whilst it is not a pre-requisite, this position would suit someone considering developing their interest to the extent of specialist training in the discipline in future.  It would be expected that the successful applicant would share the very strong patient and outcome focus, and ethos of exceptional quality of service and standard of care, that are so much defining and distinguishing characteristics of the internal medicine team at CARE.

STAFFORD, NORTH BRISBANE - SMALL ANIMAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM New Graduates welcome

Dermatology for Animals – Internship programme 2023-24

Established in 1998, Dermatology for Animals provides the veterinary dermatology service within the majority of specialist multi-disciplinary veterinary hospitals in Queensland, as well as providing dermatology referral services to regional centres in Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales. We are now inviting applications for our 2023 intake, with one position available to start in February and another in August. Interns are appointed for an eighteen-month period and are based in south-east Queensland.

Our interns work alongside our specialists, registrars and residents with the aim of providing incumbents with an in-depth understanding of veterinary dermatological skin disease and treatment. Primary case responsibility is not a feature of these positions. The knowledge gained during an internship will be applicable to those seeking to pursue further studies in veterinary dermatology (eg – pursuing residency training with a view to specialisation), and also to those wishing to gain a solid grounding in a discipline that forms approximately 30% of all non-preventative general practice accessions.

Veterinary dermatology is unique amongst referral disciplines in fostering long-term relationships with clients and patients. It’s less about fixing our patients and sending them on their way, and more about managing their issues so that they and their owners can live their best lives. It’s also unique in that dermatology rarely presents with genuine emergencies, and this allows us all to have an enviable work-life balance.

WHAT WE OFFER

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

If you think you might be interested in veterinary dermatology as a career, or just wish to hone your skills in this important discipline, then an internship with Dermatology for Animals may be what you’re looking for. If you would like to explore the opportunities further, please email your application, including a letter of intent and your current CV to:
