Veterinary Specialist Services Underwood, Logan (posted 14th December) After Hours Vet Nurse
Are you an experienced and compassionate qualified Veterinary Nurse who would like to work in a busy environment where patient care is prioritised?
Do you like daily challenges in a busy environment while maintaining gold standard patient care?
Most if not all Veterinary practices have become significantly busier over the last 12 months. We have not been immune to this and are adapting our teams and processes with the aim of delivering the excellent patient care we are known for while trying to provide our team with a working environment that is sustainable for them. This is a big challenge! We need the right people to help us manage our caseload, and this has led to several new roles being created.
We would like to increase our team size at our hospital located in Underwood to provide overnight and weekend care for our hospitalised patients. These patients will be hospitalised for a variety of conditions and whilst monitoring and treatment for some will be intensive, critical patients will still be managed within the ICU.
We are looking for qualified Veterinary Nurses to join our dedicated team in providing specialised, high-quality care for critical patients. We have full-time, part-time, and casual opportunities, with a range of day, night and weekend shifts available.
About Us
Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland. We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood. We are striving to create an environment where people can do their best work. We have many things to work on to get there, but we are adapting as fast as possible. Our teams are very passionate about delivering patient care whilst supporting each other. We have a very diverse skill set and can offer just about all specialities, diagnostic modalities, and therapies across our practice group. We have residency training programs for vets, in house training programs for nurses and over the years, about 20% of our interns have gone on to become registered Specialists. We are involved in the industry with wide participation in professional groups, universities, continuing education courses and we have our own conference. The Underwood hospital specifically has specialists, registrars, and residents with training in Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Anaesthesia, Cardiology, Emergency and Critical Care, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Animal Physiotherapy.
What we are looking for
- A person who can work independently in an after-hours setting but with the knowledge that full support (specialists, ICU and an emergency team) is near at hand.
- A person who will be a genuine team player in a large team. This means different personalities, work styles and methods, but with the same ultimate goal.
- A person who understands that we all have a role to play, and that the ultimate outcome is to deliver the best possible care for our patients, their families and our referring veterinarians.
- A person who is genuinely adaptable – we’ve had to change a whole lot of things over the last few years and foresee ongoing change an adaptation to improve our workplace.
- A person who understands that when a patient needs us, we will do our utmost to be there and give it the care it needs.
Why we hope you’ll want to join us.
- We are evolving the company with a focus on people, their careers and their development and provide a supportive learning environment, where you will also have access to further education and seminars, with the possibility of paid study leave.
- We encourage and support our nurses to learn and perform advanced nurse techniques.
- Nurses are exposed to a wide range of interesting and diverse cases, where no two days are the same.
- We use an in-house nurse-to-patient ratio scoring system to regulate the unpredictable caseload and this allows us to staff the hospital adequately. We offer
- discounted veterinary treatments and products for your pet/s.
- free onsite parking
- snacks and drinks on shift are provided regularly
- well stocked and equipped staff amenities
- flexible work schedule
- access to a supportive network of like-minded professionals
- We have initiatives across the group such as Mental Health First Aid Officers, Employee Assistance Program, regular social events and a range of other benefits
Why you might not want to join us.
- Our caseload is unpredictable and complex, and our clients are very devoted to their pets. They are with us to get the best care and they want to see that delivered in a compassionate and professional way.
- There is a high rate of change throughout the organisation at the moment to improve our environment for sustainable growth. These changes take time to progress through into reality and we are looking for people who embrace change and are adaptable and flexible.
The Role includes but is not limited to:

- Ensure patient pain management protocols are adhered to at all times.
