JERRYS PLAINS, HUNTER REGION NSW - EQUINE New Position
VETERINARIAN POSITION IN MAINLY EQUINE PRACTICE, HUNTER VALLEY NEW SOUTH WALES.
A position is available in a mainly equine stud practice with a large amount of ambulatory general equine practice plus some general small animal and a small amount of farm work (about 1%).
THE LOCATION
The practice is centrally situated in the Hunter Valley giving ready access to the stud farms of the Upper Hunter, non-thoroughbred farms throughout the Hunter as well as the Upper Hunter race tracks.
The area is a particularly beautiful area, given that the presence of the coal mines makes it a relatively wealthy part of country N.S.W. Recreational facilities are excellent and access to the many wineries, bush walking and the new expressway puts the cities of Newcastle, Sydney and Dubbo in easy reach as well as the beaches of the North and Central coasts.
Normally this would have been considered a 3 vet practice as it was recently and should become so again in the coming breeding season. In addition to these there is a lay staff of 2 permanent office staff and 2 casual or part time workers as veterinary nursing aides.
Labour shortages mainly resulting from Covid-19 restrictions led to the practice being run short staffed. This resulted in a contraction of some services.
Please click here to see photos!
THE PRACTICE
Originally the practice functioned in Jerry’s Plains as a primarily equine reproduction practice also fulfilling a general veterinary practice role in the local area.
As a result of the current staff shortages. temporarily no small animal surgery is carried out at present although the facilities remain and the license to do both large and small animal surgeries is retained.
The reduction of cattle properties in the immediate area has removed large scale cattle work although for all the above services there remains a great demand, but their reduction has enabled the business to run satisfactorily with a minimum of stress. There is an opportunity to expand these services if required.
The practice is well equipped; most things are less than 2 years old including ultrasound machines, Eklin digital radiography and a well-equipped laboratory that provides haematology, bacteriology, paracyte worm counts, reproduction services including semen analysis etc.
Advanced surgical facilities are available with three surgical centres with specialist surgeons on call for colic surgery, orthopaedic work. Caesareans etc.
An overseas graduate studying for their National Veterinary Exam would be considered.
Salary and conditions negotiable depending on experience.

NAGAMBIE, GOULBURN VALLEY - EQUINE
Yulong Stud has a position within the veterinary team of our business. Working alongside our two resident vets, you will cover all aspects of a thoroughbred stud.
Yulong is a growing thoroughbred stud based in Nagambie, Victoria. Spread over 3,000 acres and across four adjoining properties, Yulong currently has five resident stallions and 400 broodmares with over 200 foals to yearlings. Consigning yearlings at all major sales throughout Australia, and a racing team of eighty plus horses gives the veterinarians great job variety and exposure to all aspects of the business.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and organised person who wishes to be part of a close-knit veterinary team as well as learning the structure and management of a thoroughbred stud. As we are currently in the development phase of two of the additional stud properties, you would be involved with input into set up and design of vet working areas within these properties.
The chosen candidate would be joining an established veterinary practice with two highly competent veterinary nurses and two veterinarians. Dr. Pownall joined the team in 2022. She graduated from James Cook University in 2017 and spent one year in mixed practice before completing 3 breeding seasons with an equine clinic in Scone. Dr. Meyer graduated from Washington State University. She then went onto complete a surgery internship followed by a medicine fellowship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Dr Meyer has 10 years of experience in both clinical and stud medicine between the American and Australian thoroughbred industries. The veterinary team is a very friendly group with a strong passion to provide excellent patient care while still pursuing a good work life balance. With support from the other resident vets, you will share the on-call roster with the option of having four-day weeks in the months of May, June and July.
Yulong’s veterinary facilities include a full lab comprised of hematology, chemistry and blood gas machines along with the ability to do cultures and sensitivities. We also have portable ultrasound, digital radiograph and video endoscope machines. Additionally, our practice has strong relationships with nearby equine referral hospitals and therefore referral and additional support from internal medicine specialist, surgeons and theriogenologists is also available.
Reproduction would be the main focus during the breeding season and being proficient with scanning mares pre and post service, pregnancy testing and twin ablation is essential. The ideal candidate will also have prior experience with emergency stud work, foal medicine, yearling endoscopy, and radiography as well as racehorse lameness. However, a veterinarian with less experience in the latter areas will still be considered as mentorship from the senior stud veterinarians will be available. We would encourage you to attend seminars and clinics to further your education in all fields of veterinary work and the company will provide financial support for this.
You would have the opportunity to attend yearling sales to oversee the veterinary care of our yearling draft whilst on the sale complex. As well as assisting management with yearling inspections and completing thorough pre purchase clinical examinations, reading pre-sale x-rays and evaluating pre-sale upper airway endoscopy videos.
We currently have a staff of 65 and the ability to effectively communicate as well as assist with ongoing education of the stud staff is vitally important to the growth of the business.
The breeding side of the operation is located the beautiful wine region of the lower Goulburn Valley. We are located a quick 1.5-hour drive or train ride into central Melbourne. A fifth property, Yulong Park, serves as the spelling farm for our racehorses and is located on the opposite side of Melbourne and is only a short drive away from the Mornington Peninsula.
If you are ambitious and wish to advance your career further, then this would be the ideal position for you.
Requirements:
- Degree in Veterinary Medicine/Science eligible for full veterinary registration in Victoria
- A candidate who has completed an equine internship will be given preference but is not essential
- Minimum of one year of equine reproduction focused work
- Victorian driver’s license

- Four weeks annual leave
- One-week paid CE plus a contribution of $2,000 towards CE expenses per annum
