SEYMOUR, SOUTHERN GOULBURN VALLEY - MIXED
Victorian Central Vet Group Regional Vet Shortage Crisis Mitigation Strategy v. 7.3.1 Appeal to Their Sense of Humour
OVERVIEW:
It is widely accepted in the veterinary industry that attracting and retaining capable and competent veterinarians to areas outside of the major metropolitan centres is challenging, bordering on impossible. Various industry experts have described the situation as “difficult,” “very difficult,” “I don’t want to do this anymore” and “does anyone else want to have a go at being the local vet I am going to become a lettuce-farmer”.
Despite extensive self-reflection by the industry, no viable solution to this crisis has been found.
After careful consultation, Victorian Central Vet Group has commissioned an extensive survey of 10,000 veterinarians in metropolitan locations to inquire as to why they failed to realise the considerable advantages of working in outstanding rural locations such as Seymour, Euroa and Nagambie.
SURVEY RESULTS:
A representative sample of responses is as follows (note names have been changed to protect identities as some respondents expressed serious misgivings about their current employment situations. Furthermore no actual survey took place and names/opinions are entirely fabricated. Workplaces referenced are fictional in nature):
Vet #3879 Dr. Barry, Melbourne: “At my corporate job, by the time I finished the onboarding paperwork, compliance documentation, HR induction, competency assessment checklists, and watched some videos about the difference between “slip” and “trip” hazards, I’d turned 65 and my accountant said I should retire. I wish I knew years ago that I could’ve had a job in Seymour and actually done some real vet work”.
Vet #1652 Dr Rachel, Melbourne: “My main strengths are cat vaccinations, dog vaccinations, being bullied by antivaxxers into not vaccinating things, and dispensing fluoxetine to anxious cavoodles. Surgically, I can castrate cats although I’ve only done one because all of the other cats at our inner-city clinic are pure-bred British Shorthairs, Ragdolls and those weird short-legged bald cats from TikTok, and the breeders get them desexed in-utero in order to preserve their bloodlines. I just don’t think I’m cut out for a fast-paced and exciting case-load in a relaxed rural setting”.
Vet #9986 Dr Darcey, Melbourne: “I’m terrified of being on call. I understand that these days there is a telehealth service that screens out 70% of calls, but an old vet once told me he got yelled at by a drunk person because he wouldn’t drive to the clinic and open it at 2am to dispense worming tablets. I didn’t realise that work-life balance is so important these days and that the on-call phone hardly rings most weekends. I mean, what? AND I can still make a bunch of extra money if I do have to see something afterhours? That’s crazy. Pity I am already committed to the drudgery of doing 10-hour consult shifts 4 days a week. It’s a vibe. Not a great vibe, but still a vibe of sorts”.
Vet #1004 Dr James, Melbourne: “I always wanted to be a mixed-practice vet and work with cattle and sheep but I thought you needed to move 17 hours away from friends and family and have a pilot’s licence to do that. If I’d known that a job like that is within 2 hours drive of Melbourne (or 1 hour on the train), I would have leapt at the chance. I suppose it’s too late for me now though. You can’t learn new things once you finish uni, even when you have a great team of experienced vets around you- it just doesn’t work. I’ll always work in the city. I think I’d miss the traffic and demanding clients with inflated expectations too much”.
Vet #3100 Dr Tess, Melbourne: “For me, it’s about the money. I heard that rural and mixed practice vets earn half as much as their city counterparts, and that the cost of living outside of Melbourne is more than double because they have to airlift supplies in using military helicopters. It just doesn’t stack up financially. In my current role I’ll be able to own my own home by the time I’m 145 whereas in rural areas I read on an internet forum that exposes conspiracies that you can’t get a one-bedroom apartment for less than $7m. If Victorian Central Vet Group offered a great salary, incentives, CPD contributions and stuff like that I’d consider it but I’m still not sure where I’d live. I don’t trust what it says on realestate.com.au I think they’re using AI bots to fake the affordable prices. Probably to influence the US election.”
RESPONSE:
VCVG acknowledges the valid concerns expressed by respondents to this survey. We will endeavour to share our findings with the wider industry and workshop solutions with various stakeholders at our event in November, “The Rural Vet Crisis: Finding New Ways to Discuss the Crisis Without Actually Changing or Achieving Anything” - tickets online at www.boringsnoozychatfest.com.au (note no such event/website/tickets actually exist or are likely to exist in the future).
Alternatively, we suggest dissatisfied vets could try a direct-action approach and contact us to discuss employment opportunities at vcvgamanda@outlook.com. We have both full-time and part-time roles available, salary and conditions negotiable- Based out of Seymour.

YARRAMBAT & NORTH WARRANDYTE, NORTH EAST MELBOURNE - MIXED
Full Time mixed animal veterinarian position
The Veterinary Surgery is looking for a mixed animal veterinarian to join The Veterinary Surgery team (Yarrambat & North Warrandyte).
70% Small, 15% equine, 15% mixed animals.
We are seeking a veterinarian who will work well in a large, friendly and supportive team of vets and nurses that provide a high level of care to our patients.
Please click here to see photos!
The Position:
- Well-supported position within a great team of 10 vets spread across two clinics
- 4 x 9.5 hour weekday shifts with one rostered weekday off, plus 1 in 4 Saturday morning shifts
- 1 in 7 weeknights on call plus 1 in 7 weekends on call
- 4 weeks annual leave plus one week paid study leave with a further $1500 CPD allowance
- Attractive remuneration
- Large and varied medical and surgical caseload, rarely limited by financial constraints
- Best suited to a motivated, versatile and progressive vet
- Best suited to a vet who will appreciate and contribute to a culture of fun in our workplace
- Baking is looked upon favourably
The clinics and the business:
- Main clinic located in Yarrambat, a picturesque and semi-rural suburb approx 45 mins northeast of Melbourne's CBD
- Branch clinic located in Warrandyte, a beautiful village nestled in the green wedge alongside the Yarra River, 40 min east of the CBD
- Independently owned business with two directors who will happily clean cages, and work shoulder to shoulder with the associates
- Both clinics comprehensively equipped with premium diagnostic and monitoring equipment.
Words from one of our Associate Vets:
- We are one of the few clinics where is it possible to live in the "city" and do mixed animal practice
- Our nurses are well-trained to look after us, not over-book and give us enough time for consults, phone calls and catch-ups. Lunchtimes and home-times are considered sacred, and we almost always get out on time. If you want to leave the clinic to go for a walk or pick up lunch at lunchtime, that is almost always possible.
- Doing on-call is an opportunity to serve the local community, to gain unique experience, learn to think on your feet and see some cool cases, but we also have the ability to refer small animal emergencies to 24-hour centres so they can receive the best of care (which also means on-call isn't overly busy)
- As we see such a variety of animals and cases, there is definitely the ability for vets to develop a special interest - anything from alpacas, or equine dentistry, or small animal behaviour. But otherwise, this is an awesome clinic to become a well-rounded mixed animal practitioner, with vets experienced in different areas to provide support and guidance.
- Our large animal work is often for clients who keep a small number of these animals as pets, and so individual diagnostics and treatment are often pursued, but there is also the scope for doing some herd health work if vets are interested
- We have the ability both to work-up and treat complicated cases in-house, and use travelling specialists, but also, we commonly refer and have excellent relationships with specialist centres
- Our clients are generally excellent, usually very respectful and keen to do the best for their animals. As a small independent practice, we have many clients that have been coming to the clinic for decades and value the personalised care we can provide for their animals.
- We are a very casual, friendly, chatty bunch. We work hard but have fun. The radio plays out the back. We often sit and have lunch together. The vet team are very supportive and approachable and share cases and ideas and ask each other for help commonly.
Please contact Andy Lynch at andrew.lynch@thevetsurgery.com.au or at the Yarrambat Veterinary Hospital 03 9436 1699 to register your interest or to further discuss the position.

We are located in Lara (15-20 minutes from Geelong CBD, 25-30 minutes from Werribee) on a large block with extensive native gardens.
If this sounds like you please get in touch. Feel free to call Laura (owner/vet) on 0402 846 210 or email laura.a.schram@gmail.com

BALLARAT - SMALL ANIMALS
Associate Veterinarian – Companion Animal
Ballarat Veterinary Practice
• Compassion • Respect • Professionalism • Teamwork
Here at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice, we are confident that we know what is most important to our veterinarians.
Our team has spoken, and we know that:
- work/life balance,
- challenging and interesting case load, and
- a supportive working environment
are key to a fulfilling veterinary career.
In our clinics, veterinarians work a true eight-day fortnight with no on-call requirements. That’s right, you get three whole days off per week to spend time exploring what our major regional town of Ballarat has to offer. For more on that, we encourage you to take a look at this video that depicts life in beautiful, picturesque Ballarat.
Our location means that our case load is interesting and varied – no two days are the same, so there’s ample opportunity for learning, growth and absolutely no room for boredom. Across our group of six clinics, you can advance your skills and grow your career – we guarantee it.

ALBURY, NSW/VIC BORDER - SMALL ANIMAL New Position
Seeking a FT/PT veterinarian to join our team.
NEW or RECENT graduate, or experienced Veterinarian
Very supportive hospital, seeking like minded Veterinarian
Up to 4 day working week (38hours) available, but ideal candidate would be 2-3 days per week, fair share of after-hours and on call is required, including rotational Saturdays.
Team consulting for optimal support
$80,000 for New graduate ++ for experience by negotiation (up to $130,000)
We are very keen for a new or recent graduate veterinarian to join our team on a full-time basis. We would also welcome an experienced vet to join our team.
Being a vet is hard, you spent a long time studying, it’s cost a lot of money, and hours of dedication. Your first job is critical for setting you up for your career and your experiences in that job will shape your thoughts and feelings around the veterinary world.
One of the things that are most important to us at our hospital is to provide a supportive and encouraging workplace, where you are challenged to work just outside your comfort zone. This is called the ‘growth zone’. We operate in this zone because we know we can support you - and you will experience success and joy, and love coming to work as much as we do.
A bit about us:
Our hospital is 5 years old this year and we have enjoyed a welcomed response from the community and have a well-established and lovely client base. We have 3 senior vets with different areas of expertise, who complement each other very well, as well as 2 other recent/new grad (2023) on the team. We operate on a 2-3 vets per day basis currently.
We start each day off with a ‘morning huddle’, where all team members have a look at the schedule for the day, share a daily win we have had and ensure clarity in everyone’s roles for that day.
Currently we have rostered surgery days where you will do surgery in the morning and consult in the afternoon and consulting days. When you join us and are comfortable, we have the capacity to increase surgery to 2 vets per day as we have separate dog and cat surgery rooms. Our surgery caseload is varied, and we have lots of opportunity for routine desexings, as we also do all vet work exclusively for local rescue, Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue.
Please click here to see photos!
Our consults are mostly 30 minutes, giving you time to get to know clients, do a thorough examination and discuss treatment plans. We have an experienced support team, including a dedicated receptionist, senior nurses and trainee nurses. We support the nursing team’s growth by getting them to do as much as they can so you can focus on vet work.
A full time vet would work a 4-day week, 8am-6pm and have 1 rostered day off. After hours is evenly shared (when you’re ready) – currently each vet does one full week per month on call (including the weekend). Call outs are very minimal, manageable, and very lucrative. You would join the after-hours roster after 6 months if you’re a new grad, or straight away if your experienced and capable. There will always be a mentor vet available to assist you.
A little bit about you:
We are looking for someone who has:
- Great people presence, who can connect and relate to clients
- Time efficiency
- Attention to detail
- Willing to teach others
- High EQ – good self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills
A little bit about our hospital
We are currently a daytime GP hospital with a vet on call for afterhours, but we are investigating options of having a night shift. This is an area we hope to grow into. This would open up the possibility for emergency work, which is very different to daytime GP work. We are very excited about this possibility, but don’t have any concrete details to share, except to fully inform any applicant that this could be something coming to our hospital.
We are well set up and some of our major equipment includes:
- Digital X-ray
- Ultrasound
- Dental equipment, including dental x-ray
- Separate and dedicated dog and cat hospitals, each with own treatment area and surgery
- 3 consulting rooms
- Idexx in house bloods and other routine in house laboratory equipment
We are registered as a Gold ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic and run Ezyvet as our Practice management software.
We practice hospital excellence and are continually self-evaluating our protocols to ensure best practice is achieved.
Ongoing CPD and team training:
This is critical for everyone in the team. We advocate for ongoing learning with regular team training and refresher training, practice membership to VIN, Vet Education webinars and ISFM. You will also be supported with a study allowance of $1500 PA and 1 week study leave per year. This comes into effect once you have been with us for 12 months.
We have monthly nurse and vet meetings to ensure smooth flow of hospital procedures and discuss projects we are working on. We hold a Team meeting quarterly where we close the clinic and discuss non-clinical training.
Teaching:
We pride ourselves on being a hospital, that advocates training and teaching, generally hosting veterinary nursing students and vet students where we can. Once you have found your feet, we would love for you to teach others, as teaching is also an amazing confidence building experience and really gets you comfortable with the content.
A little bit about Albury-Wodonga:
The clinic is located in Albury (Lavington) but the area is generally referred to as Albury-Wodonga. Albury being located on the NSW side of the Murray River and twin sister city - Wodonga being located on the Victorian side. Together the area offers great out-of-work lifestyle opportunities, many outdoor places to explore, in winter the snow fields are only an hour or so away. It is a large enough city to have all of your major shops and services, but small enough to still have that country feeling.
You can visit our Facebook page to see some photos of the clinic and get a ‘feel’ for the team - or we welcome you to come and meet the team. We would welcome you to work with us during final year practice placement if you are graduating this year.
For all enquiries please contact: Dr Sally Henry (Veterinarian & Practice Manager) by phone 0402902326 or via email manager@alburyanimalhospital.com.au
Testimonial from a vet student:
Aimee initially did university practical placement with us but has then come back to do some nursing for experience during the holidays. Here’s what she had to say: “After I completed placement at Dr Jana’s in the summer of 2020, I returned as a nurse both after my placement and in the summer of 21-22. My choice to return was to do with the amazing and supportive team who became like family to me. Each of the vets has been an excellent mentor and all the nurses are incredible to work with. The clinic provides a safe environment to learn and excel and would be the perfect place for a new grad to start their journey’
– This vet now works for us. – Dr. Aimee Owens.

We welcome applications from veterinarians with a strong interest in these large animal species. However if companion animals are your preference, we have a wide variety of cases to accommodate you too. We perform a range of varied procedures and surgeries including some orthopaedic surgeries but have the option to refer to specialists for more complex cases if required.
