ADELAIDE-BASED, MOBILE PRACTICE - SMALL ANIMAL/EMERGENCY, GRADUATE PROGRAM
New Position
AFTERHOURS SMALL ANIMAL NEW GRAD MENTOR POSITION
Pawprints Afterhours is looking for a new graduate who is keen on the emergency sector. This is a unique position specifically tailored to grow your emergency, hospital, and critical care skill sets.
About us:
You won’t have ever seen anything like Pawprints before!
Pawprints Afterhours is a newly developing company in Adelaide designed specifically to improve outcomes for urgent care level patients. We are a mobile service provider who offers overnight hospital monitoring within the GPs own clinic. Urgent care consults, and emergency triage of critical patients are also part of this package.
A company van which is full of all the tools needed to provide excellent ECC care is our office – please ask about the toys!
About the Role
As a newly starting company Pawprints is looking for an aspiring ECC clinician who is willing to trade cross-pollination work for 1-on-1 mentoring. You and the principal vet would be paired together on all shifts and work together to complete the nights work.
The role is full time and solely afterhours – we only work when the GPs are closed. This will include weekend work as the team grows, and a full weekend afterhours care can be offered to clients. Until then, the work is predominantly ‘as needed’ up to a maximum of 3 nights a week.
Key benefits
- Absolutely no solo work*
- Full 2-year development program covering all the ECC essentials (including communications, blood gas interpretation, and POCUS training)
- Commitment to support CPD – you have something you want to do, we will help you do it!
- Empathetic and supportive teammates – it’s a core value of the company!
- Attractive salary that grows with you.
- Minimal client contact - Our hospital clients are other vets!
- All work is to be performed on rostered time – including training modules! If a meeting must happen outside of rostered time, it will be compensated and advised of well in advance.
*If disaster strikes and the principal is sick/has personal emergency, you would still be expected to handle the hospital patient we were called out for. There would be no consults that night, and the nurse in your team would also be with you.
About You
Pawprints is looking for:
- Recent or just graduated veterinarian (registerable in SA)
- A keen interest in Emergency and Critical Care work.
- Someone personally aligned with Pawprints Core Values (Continuous Positive Regard, Patient First, Integrity, Excellence, Continuous Improvement)
- A willingness to do the small things for a bigger goal – at times you will be acting as the principal’s support staff, but other times she will be doing it for you!
- Understanding that small teams mean ALL work is for everyone to complete.
- A person who embraces human diversity and all the weirdness that comes with it – we are committed to being a neurodiverse/mental health safe space.
- A commitment to communication skill development as a priority both for client and staff interactions. To create a safe space, we need a deep and empathetic understanding of human behaviour and communications, and Pawprints will help you learn these skills!

PARA HILLS, NORTHERN ADELAIDE - SMALL ANIMAL
We have the perfect team but unfortunately our recent grad has to move across the country to be with family so now, (after we all finish crying that he is leaving), we are looking for a vet wanting to start in December or January!
We would love to welcome a New Grad, or Recent Grad, or an experienced vet to our team! We pride ourselves on helping new or recent grads becoming the vets that they want to be. We offer an induction and support package that is planned with the new or recent grad and offers the amount of support that they would like. For some they would like extended consults, some need more surgical coaching, some need both. We can offer you the amount of support that you need, and in a way that suits you. We have learnt over the years in helping multiple new grads that every new grad is different and a one fits all approach does not work. We are a busy clinic and have a good variety of cases to give lots of experience in different areas, and we have a variety of vets with special interests in various areas that can give great advice!. We are also one of the rare non-corporate clinics. We do not focus on KPIs etc but instead spend our time focussing on the medicine and surgery and what makes us happy being a vet!
What we love about our clinic-
- We have vets that do extra work in niches that they love. They are encouraged to pursue their interests in those areas, ie ultrasound, dentistry, surgery, emergency medicine. This provides a more indepth assistance to a new grad in any specific area, and vets that are excited about their interest areas are able to share their passions.
- We practice a high standard of medicine and have clients that support this. We do this both with the high standards that we set within the clinic, and also by utilising and working with the various specialist centres around to get the best care for the patient.
- We encourage and support Continuing Education, not just for the vets, but for the nurses as well. This means that vets are well supported with highly trained nurses that are capable of a lot of tasks that help the vet they are working with. Continuing Education is not just a yearly course that everyone is encouraged to do, but also with the evening seminars, lunch and learns, and the clinic discussions of patients. Our Vets on a daily basis will discuss and give opinions on more detailed cases.
- We Tailor a persons support and training to try and identify what areas are their strengths, their interests and their weaknesses, and how we as a clinic can help them achieve these things. This is not limited to just new grads, but all vets.
- We do a lot of Pro-bono work for wildlife and strays. We do this because it is a great morale booster for all staff to be able to help, and also keeps our job interesting. As a clinic we have been involved and assisted with bushfire rescues, heat stress events of flying foxes, of mass poisoned parrots, and with duck rescue during duck shooting season. This is on top of the daily mix of birds, bats, and other wildlife.
- We see a good variety of small animal species- dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, mice, ferrets, birds, bats etc
- We have a great clinic culture and lifestyle. A happy and cheery place to work. Somewhere that people all say hello in the mornings, and care if something is going wrong in your life.
- We try and accommodate requests for specific hours or days, for instance if you play netball on a Thursday night then we will always try and work around that. You have the option to work longer hours and have more days off, or shorter hours and spread the hours over more days. We try and support individuals outside interests, for instance one vet works with marine wildlife and may need time off to assist injured marine wildlife, another goes bat banding on specific days so needs these days off, and some have kids and need to go to their kids sportsdays. We refer all after hours to a local emergency centre. We are closed Sundays and rotate the Saturdays 1 in 2 (only open until 12 on a Saturday).
- Our salary has recently modernised (gone up!) and is well above award. We pay an hourly rate so that people are paid appropriately for the hours that they work.
- We believe that the patient is at the centre of everything that we do. We do not expect any staff member to do any task that they do not feel is the morally right thing to do. Hence we do not do convenience euthanasias.
- We try and match clients to vets and love to work with the strengths of each vet. We have clients who love a quiet and introverted vet, others that like the confidence of an extrovert, we have some clients that like a simple approach, and others a more intense management plan.
- We have lots of fun equipment- digital dental (CR) and Digital normal xrays (DR), Ultrasound, Abaxis in house lab machines etc. We utilise blood pressure and endCo2 monitoring with every anaesthetic, as well as the other usual monitoring parameters. We use periop IV fluids in every patient. We have Cardell units, other multimonitoring units, PetMaps etc. All anaesthetics are monitored by qualified nurses with full anaesthetic training. All patients are 1 on 1 monitored until fully conscious, and have TPRs done regularly post operatively. We use Vet Connect for Idexx bloods and Asteris PACS for radiology.
- We have separate dog, cat and wildlife wards, and have a "calm" soft euthanasia room.
If you are looking for a great place to launch your career, or you have not clicked with your current clinic, then please send me an email or give me a call. You are also welcome to come and have a look around, or even spend a day with us if you are not sure whether to apply or not. All of this is of course completely confidential. If you want to talk to our most recent grad from 2022 then I am happy to give you her details. I really believe that people will work best when they are happy and supported and doing the job that they love and are being paid appropriately for it. Life is too short to not enjoy it!
- For a computer walk through- https://www.google.com/.../data=!3m8!1e1!3m6...
And have a look at our website- http://parahillsvet.com.au
We try and look after all of our staff to provide the best quality of life that we can! If you are looking at moving from interstate then we can try and help with that too. South Australia is a great place to work and live! Para Hills, South Australia, is a suburb in the inner northern suburbs of Adelaide, only about 20 minutes from the city. If you are local and starting out then we may be able to offer a signing bonus.
Remuneration will depend on skills and experience but will be well above award.
If you think that this job might be right for you then please either PM me, call my mobile on 0417 818 878 or email trudyseidel@yahoo.com for more information or with your resume. If you are semi interested and would just like a meet and greet and have a walk through before submitting a formal application then we would be happy to do that too (and of course this would remain completely confidential.
