You will play a key role in delivering high-quality pathology services to the New Zealand Department of Conservation and contribute to postgraduate education, advancing research and scholarship, supporting student success, and engaging with professional and community stakeholders. We are very open to different arrangements. You might be looking for a regular part-time role, a few additional shifts alongside your usual job, or a locum position for several weeks or a few months while spending some time in the Kāpiti/Wellington region.

About KEV
Kapiti Emergency Vets is a new after-hours emergency service based within the purpose-built Vets on Riverbank hospital in Ōtaki. We provide emergency and urgent veterinary care for pets across the Kāpiti Coast, Horowhenua and surrounding region.
The clinic is modern, spacious and well equipped, and we are continuing to develop the service as our caseload grows.
Our team includes vets with extensive emergency and critical care experience, and KEV offers a supportive, collaborative working environment where vets can draw on the knowledge and experience of the wider team when needed. Although you need to be comfortable assessing and stabilising emergency patients, we don't expect everyone joining us to have extensive experience in emergency work. Good general practice experience, sound clinical judgement and the ability to stay calm when things get busy are just as important.
The work
Shifts can include a mixture of:
- weeknight evenings and overnights
- weekend daytime shifts
- weekend overnights
There is flexibility around how often you work and the types of shifts you take.
We are particularly interested in hearing from vets who could join us for a locum block of several weeks or months, as well as vets who would like regular ongoing shifts.
The caseload is varied and might include trauma, toxicity, respiratory emergencies, urinary obstruction, seizures, collapse, GDVs, wounds, acute medical cases, pain management, end-of-life care and hospitalised patients requiring overnight monitoring.

Who would suit the role?
You don't need to have worked in a dedicated emergency hospital before.
We are looking for vets who have a solid companion animal background and are comfortable with:
- triage and initial stabilisation
- general medical cases
- common emergency presentations
- routine emergency surgery
- communicating clearly and compassionately with owners
- working closely with an experienced veterinary nurse
Emergency experience is certainly an advantage, but a capable GP vet with good clinical judgement and an interest in developing their ECC skills could be a great fit.
You will need to be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.

A Role Designed Around Your Life
We are moving to normal daytime working hours, with the clinic open from 9:00am–6:30pm.
No more late evening finishes or semi-emergency-style hours.

Position Details
Hours: 20–40 hours per week, or more if desired
Clinic hours: 9:00am–6:30pm
Salary: $80,000–$165.000 per annum (pro rata), based on a 40-hour working week and experience.
Flexible working arrangements can be discussed at interview, with shift numbers and working days agreed around both the clinic and your preferred lifestyle.

If you do have particular interests, we actively encourage you to develop them as we have a full orthopaedics suite, ultrasound, and new diagnostic kit available.
You should be comfortable managing a broad range of GP cases and emergencies, reaching a clear outcome or making an appropriate referral when required, and making practical, calm and independent clinical decisions.
