About us
Edgewood Veterinary Group is an independently owned companion animal practice near Chelmsford, Essex, UK. The practice has grown from a 3 vet practice in 1994 to a 10 vet practice. Edgewood has 3 branches, the largest is Purleigh; the other two are in Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch. The distance between the Purleigh and Maldon branch by car is a 10 min drive whilst it is 20 minutes between the Burnham-on-Crouch surgery and the Purleigh surgery.
The practice has been in existence since the 1950s, when it was primarily a farm animal and equine practice with a small companion animal component. Approximately 15 years ago, the practice became solely a companion animal practice.
We pride ourselves on the quality of work we do; we aim to make a diagnosis and not just treat. This means that diagnostics are a very big part of our lives.
We have DR and dental radiography, multi-parameters anaesthetic monitors, Doppler blood pressure monitors, capnography, tonopen, high-spec. ultrasound machine, rigid endoscope, gastroscope and bronchoscope, bair huggers for all our patients under anaesthesia, dedicated dental suite, in-house laboratory with endocrinology and Sedivue urine analyser.

We have separate dog, cat and exotics wards that minimises the patient’s stress when in for an operation, procedure or hospitalisation. We have a separate isolation ward if required. We work in an air-conditioned building that provides all-round comfort for man and beast, alike! Our clients love our large car park, enabling stress-free parking.
We have a varied caseload, primarily dogs and cats with rabbits and the occasional exotic pet. We have a visiting peripatetic orthopaedic / soft tissue surgeon and cardiologist that enables us to offer the highest level of care in-house.
We have a small team of highly motivated individuals that are making the practice as ‘green’ as possible. Within the greening, a composter was requested to enable food waste reduction.
We also have unusually, a home-built pizza oven in our lovely garden, allowing Johan, our intermittent locum, the pleasure of preparing us, amongst many things, fantastic pizzas. If you enjoy trying different foods or food you’ve never had the opportunity of sampling, believe me, you will, without doubt, get the opportunity here!
We have a wonderful team of vets, RVNs, trainee nurses, VCAs, receptionists and admin staff that get on tremendously well, allowing us to have a tight-knot team that functions as one.
All of our teams strive to offer the best options to all our patients and clients.
Our nurses, led by our head nurse, Nicola, are super helpful, guiding our trainee nurses and VCAs, towards their qualifications. Our nurses take and run blood samples, do urine analyses, put patient’s on iv fluids, do our anaesthetic monitoring and a load more jobs that allow the vets to get on with the job that they need to do. We couldn’t be without them!
Our vet team is made up of a suitable mix of many-years qualified and newly-qualified vets, allowing everybody to contribute to ever-evolving medical protocols. We have an online subscription to the BSAVA manuals library, enabling quick access to medical and surgical information. We have a learning culture with regular monthly clinical governance meetings to help improve patient outcomes.
