ADELAIDE - CRITICAL CARE INTERNSHIP - 12 MONTHS

Clinical shifts will be primarily in our intensive care unit working alongside our criticalists in addition to our experienced emergency clinicians and highly skilled nursing team. SASH Adelaide is a state-of-the-art facility with a purpose-built emergency room and intensive care unit to be able to provide exceptional care to our patients. This includes availability of in-house diagnostics, blood bank, mechanical ventilation, high flow oxygen, oxygen cages and more, with collaborative specialist support across departments.

You will be encouraged to have primary case responsibility to maximize learning and growth during the program. You will also have the opportunity participate in journal club, ER physiology rounds and other didactic opportunities offered both onsite and across the SASH network. An annual stipend of $40k is offered with concurrent enrolment in the graduate program which results in award of a Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Studies after completion of 2 semesters. About the GARS Surgery Service

The surgical department consists of seven surgical specialists with a team of residents, interns and nurses who are supported by specialists in imaging, medicine, oncology and critical care to provide stellar patient care.

Our three operating theatres are truly enviable, overlooking the neighbouring golf course with each fully equipped with endoscopic towers, mono/bipolar electrocautery, suction and Bipolar Vessel Sealing Devices. Two of the theatres also have electric fluoroscopic tables to facilitate minimally invasive image guided neurologic, orthopaedic and interventional radiology procedures. We have multiple locking plate systems (LCP, SOP, Fixin) in all sizes from 1.5 to 4.5mm plus a complete speciality plate range (DPO, SHO, PCA, PanTA, ParTA, supracondylar etc). We also have Biomedtrix iLoc Interlocking nail system, IMEX circular and linear ESF in all sizes.

As Victoria’s leading joint replacement and resurfacing centre, we are the only site equipped and performing Biomedtrix THR (nano, micro, standard, giant and lateral bolt systems), Biomedtrix Total Elbow Replacement, Biometrix Total Ankle Replacement, Arthrex CUE, SynACART and Kyon PGR.

For soft tissue procedures, we have a comprehensive range of laparoscopic and thoracoscopic equipment plus all the staplers, Norfolk (Sub, AUS) and Infiniti (IH PSS) interventional radiology equipment and implants. For neurosurgery, we have Stryker electric neurosurgical systems and a comprehensive range of instrumentation. Hospital flow and ergonomics has been specifically designed for easy patient flow between MRI/CT/Imaging/theatre and recovery.

GARS offers an outstanding residency program in Small Animal Surgery. The centre is accredited with ANZCVS and ECVS for training residents. We currently have two surgical residents. They enjoy high caseload and a huge variety of cases making it easy to fulfil requirements for training programs. Our residents receive high quality case-based teaching from surgical specialists and other specialists within the hospital. They also have access to a large number of journal clubs and clinical rounds (whole of hospital, Surgery, ECC, Internal Medicine, Morbidity and Mortality). For research projects we have a designated staff member to provide support and advice on study design, implementation and statistics.

Position details

The surgery internship is designed to ensure you develop a deeper level of knowledge and competence in all areas of small animal surgery by the completion of the program.
Mentorship, training, support, and guidance provided by a dynamic group of Specialists (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology and Emergency and Critical Care) and a supportive team of nursing staff.
Involvement in daily hospital and medicine rounds, in-clinic tutorials and journal club
Mentorship and support for interns to pursue ANZCVS membership (if not already completed) and develop research projects is supported and encouraged.
Continuing education support, including attendance at conferences is supported and encouraged.
Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS, MARS and external institutions.

15-month Emergency and Critical Care Internship • Starting November 2026 • Ringwood, Melbourne

The internship

We are looking for an energetic and hard-working vet with at least 12 months in general or mixed practice to join our Emergency and Critical Care internship, starting November 2026 and running for 15 months.

You will work alongside our experienced emergency clinicians and specialists across ECC, Small Animal Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine and Anaesthesia. This is a mentored role by design - you are here to become a better emergency vet, not just to fill a roster gap.

How the internship runs

The majority of your shifts are rostered alongside one of our two Emergency and Critical Care specialists or one of our four ANZCVS members in emergency medicine. Guidance is there on the case in front of you, at the time you need the answer - not at a case review three days later.
You progress into managing your own cases as the internship goes on, with the specialist team and senior emergency clinicians around you.
Night shifts come in during the last third of the internship, once you are well established.
The roster runs in six-week blocks and averages a minimum of 32 hours a week, with a mix of day consulting, swing and weekend shifts. You have every second weekend off.

About MASH

Melbourne Animal Specialist Hospital (MASH) is a privately owned, patient-focused and fully independent 24-hour emergency and referral hospital in Ringwood, just off EastLink and twenty minutes from the inner suburbs. We opened in 2023 and have grown into a premier referral provider with specialists in emergency and critical care, small animal surgery, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia. The team around you

Dr Merrin Hicks (FANZCVS), one of our Emergency and Critical Care specialists, leads our ECC internship program and takes an active role in developing the clinicians around her. You will also work alongside Dr Alison Stickney (DACVIM) in Internal Medicine, Dr Ralph Webster (DACVS-SA) in Surgery, Dr Mara Schier (DipECVAA) in Anaesthesia and Dr Natalie Webster (DipECVDI) in Diagnostic Imaging.

Our nursing team is highly experienced and genuinely supportive, and the ECC vet team around you is deep in emergency experience.

A veterinary degree registrable in Victoria.
At least 12 months' experience in small animal general practice or mixed practice.

Position: Residency in Small Animal Surgery starting in late 2026.

Our established specialist surgery service has a 3-year residency position available in Small Animal Surgery starting in November 2026. Successful completion of the residency program will enable credential submission for FANZCVS specialist examinations in Small Animal Surgery.

Advanced Vetcare is a large, multi-site, independently-owned referral centre. The Internship

SASH North Ryde is pleased to continue offering its ECC Specialty Internship Program. Now in its seventh year, the program continues to grow and produce successful graduates.
As our ECC Intern, you will be an integral part of the team under the watchful guidance of our 4 Critical Care specialists, as well as ECC Residents in training, who staff the hospital 7 days a week.

This is a 12 month program, which will include a rotating roster of shifts during days and evenings, occasional nights, and includes weekends, giving you exposure to a wide variety of interesting cases.

We have structured our Internship to prepare the candidate to be successful and confident to take the next step into a residency program in ECC, or to continue growth and development as an Emergency clinician.

You will have the opportunity for independent case management in both the Emergency Room and in the ICU, with support and guidance from the specialist team.

Alongside on-the-floor teaching and mentoring, ECC interns will attend three hours of dedicated teaching rounds each week, including journal club and board review sessions. Monthly Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) rounds further support interdisciplinary collaboration and learning. There are also opportunities to participate in clinical research projects, present at conferences, and contribute to publications.

The Residency Program:

This program will see you actively involved in providing all aspects of patient care across both our Emergency and Critical Care departments under the supervision of our team of 4 Critical Care Specialists. You will have primary case responsibility with clinical time split between shifts in the Emergency Room (ER) and those focused on inpatient management of cases in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

You will be responsible for professional client and referring vet communication and maintenance of a high quality medical record for your cases, while additionally providing support to Emergency clinicians, Specialty Interns, and Rotating Interns in the Emergency room. As part of a 24/7 service, residents participate in a rotating roster that includes days, evenings, occasional nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Resident schedules include a 4 day work week when assigned to the ICU, and a 3 day work week in the ER. This is a 36-month, ACVECC approved program designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and experience to become an ACVECC, board-certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist, and successfully pass the certifying exam.

Teaching, Mentorship and Research:

Dedicated mentorship from an assigned Critical Care Specialist, with ongoing support from the entire Critical Care team. Work under the direct supervision of a Criticalist for roughly 50% of your Emergency and 100% of your Critical Care department rotations.
Three hours of protected teaching time each week, including ECC specific board review and journal club sessions.
Regular multidisciplinary education, including Morbidity and Mortality rounds.
Opportunities and support to complete the research and publication requirements as part of ACVECC guidelines.(original prospective research, retrospective, and/or case report)
One week of Continuing Education leave and an annual travel stipend to support conference attendance.

Veterinary Graduate Development Program

Applications are now open for the Animal Referral and Emergency Centre's Graduate Development Program – a 12-month, full-time role, designed especially for new and recent graduates. The role

The AREC Veterinary Graduate Development Program includes:

Foundations in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care delivered by VECCS
Rounds and tutorials
Wet labs: hands-on practice in procedures and surgeries such as chest tube and feeding tube placement, tracheostomy, splenectomy, enterotomy, gastropexy.
Surgery days at a local general practice to develop experience in routine surgeries such as spays
RECOVER certified CPR training
Ultrasound training
Ventilator training
Endoscopy training
Communication skills training

In addition to our structured graduate program, we create tailored learning and development plans based on your individual goals. You'll work alongside our team of senior ECC veterinarians, managing a broad mix of primary consultations, hospital cases, procedures and surgeries. Located in the Hunter region, our hospital sees a diverse and high caseload of emergency presentations - giving you excellent hands-on exposure and a strong foundation in emergency and critical care.
