Your Role

Consultations for a wide range of presentations in companion animals.

Queanbeyan Veterinary Hospital is looking for a new vet to join our team!

Why Queanbeyan?

We are a fantastic, friendly, and inclusive practice. Our clientele are lovely, and mostly keen to fully work up cases, so you can practice medicine to a satisfyingly high standard. As part of the Capital Paws Group we have access to a wide network of vets with different special interest areas who are always keen to help. We have sonographers, surgeons, behaviourists, dentists and medicine gurus, a rabbit vet and reptile enthusiasts, among others. We also provide internal referral to surgical and medical specialists. Whatever your question or interest there is someone to talk to.

We have regular social and continuing education catch ups, and the level of collegiality is second to none. Our group is encouraging and supportive of continuing education, and skills development. If you're interested, we would love you to get involved with the group's animal health programmes in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

What about the bells and whistles?

Our clinic is delightfully well equipped with in house digital radiography, dental radiography, a great ultrasound machine (and in-house sonographer), in-house HESKA blood machines and tonometry as some of our many handy tools. We have orthopaedic capabilities as well as a wide range of general surgical and medical capabilities, including chemotherapy.

Work-life Balance and CPD

What about the after hours? No after hours! We're so lucky in Canberra to have two emergency centres at night time and on the weekends, and the specialist centre just down the road from us. Within the Capital Paws group, we also have a dedicated daytime weekend emergency clinic.
Full time four days per week OR Part-time - flexible arrangements are available and encouraged to suit your needs
Half-day Saturdays (8am-12pm) with a 1-in-4 Saturday rotation
We also offer our staff an annual wellness allowance to encourage self-care and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) if needed
A generous CPD allowance is also offered, including a daily allowance towards travel and accommodation costs.

The clinic has all the normal toys: two sterile surgeries, digital radiography and ultrasound, separate cat and dog consulting rooms and wards, heated and oxygen capable cages, tonometer, BAIR huggers, multi-parameter monitors, a full pathology suite, and a dedicated dental suite with built-in dental radiography.

We’ll work with you to find a suitable roster. Our standard full time roster consists of 8 working days/fortnight, with a rostered day off each week and an additional day off after working a Saturday. Or negotiate a part-time roster. The clinic is open from 8.00am-6pm Monday-Friday and 8.00am-1pm Saturday. There is no on-call duty and we do not open Sundays nor public holidays.

Our salary package is generous and negotiable with at minimum 4 weeks annual leave and 1 week study leave + study leave allowance + annual practice registration and radiation licence paid, + practice membership for VIN, CVE, Plumbs and ISFM.

Equine Veterinarian

Canberra Racetrack and Equestrian Services is currently seeking an equine veterinarian to join our 4-vet practice based in Canberra. Canberra is a large city with a population of approximately 500,000 located less than 3hours from Sydney and 2 hours from the coast and the snow. The city itself has undergone a transformation in recent years and boasts first class restaurants, schools and educational, cultural and sporting facilities.

The Practice
CRES is a well established practice with a large client base which has recently acquired the infrastructure previously known as Canberra Equine Hospital from corporate ownership. This exciting opportunity allows for exponential potential as we are reopening the surgical facilities, inpatient care and lameness diagnosis using the existing premises. The clinic is located adjacent to Canberra Racetrack (known as Thoroughbred Park). We currently service clients at the Canberra and nearby Queanbeyan racetracks as well as several equestrian centres and these can be referred into the clinic for further workups. The practice is fully equipped with digital X-ray, ultrasound, portable and video endoscope, gastroscope, shockwave and thermography.

The veterinarian will be supported by 4 experienced equine vets (memberships and fellowships in radiology, medicine, surgery and equine practice) as well as ancillary staff.

The Position
An equine veterinarian with an interest and experience in racing, surgery and lameness would be advantageous. The role will be 5 days per week with limited after hours. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience but above industry norm with 4 weeks annual leave and 1 week study leave. A fully equipped and insured car, mobile phone and equipment will be provided.

The practice is a subsidiary of the Crown Group which has similar practices in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast. Clients include highly respected racing identities and FEI registered competition horses and venues.

The Practice is an Academic Associate Practice with the University of Melbourne, and in addition has veterinary students seeing practice from international veterinary schools as well as the other Universities in Australia.

We do need someone to start before Christmas, so that you've got time to settle in. But don't worry - we close down for the actual Christmas break because we believe everyone deserves a proper rest, some pavlova, and a few days without a thermometer in their pocket.

From January, you'll be working alongside Dr Harry, and then from mid-March, you'll take the reins while he's off on his honeymoon. That'll be your time to shine - sole charge, supported by a team of experienced nurses who absolutely run the show. I'll likely return 1–2 days a week from March.

You'll need to be available for our Saturday consulting shift (9am–1pm) - that part's non-negotiable. We will need you to work full time sole-charge for the month of March-May but otherwise we can discuss if you would prefer part-time or full time hours ongoing. Our clinic is usually 1.5-2.5 FTE.

This role is to cover maternity leave for at least 6 months, but it’s not a locum position — we’re looking for someone who’ll become a long-term part of our team.

The Role

We are seeking a full-time experienced Veterinarian to work at our well-equipped veterinary hospital in Weston Creek (Canberra).
The days are varied and interesting covering a range of small animal medicine and surgery, including:

Client consultations and working with nurses on nurse triage patients
Basic surgeries but an interest in more advanced surgery is encouraged and welcomed (experienced vet mentor available)
Dentistry including extractions
Radiography; including dental (both digital)
Ultrasonography (ultrasound skills are ideal, but experienced vet mentor available if you want to learn)
Interpretation of onsite Idexx lab results

There are no afterhours or on call shifts, we work on a rotating roster (38h week) where you will only work 1 in 4 Saturdays.

About you

Necessary qualities the successful Veterinarian will need to possess:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
Veterinary Degree registerable in the ACT
Excellent communication skills and presentation
Warm and Friendly personality with a professional and positive ‘can do’ attitude
Organised, motivated and efficient with an attention to detail
The ability to work well and contribute within a team
Caring & compassionate

We are located in Weston Creek an easy half hour drive from anywhere in Canberra, with free parking onsite. There’s local shops and cafes in walking distance of the hospital and a neighbourhood oval right next door.

About you:

Experience: 5 years of experience in general practice, within small animals.
Qualifications: Bachelor or Doctor of Veterinary Science, registered with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board as a Veterinary Surgeon.
