We are seeking to appoint a Staff Veterinarian- Small Animal Internship (Surgery) to join a team of outstanding world-class clinical specialist colleagues at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney.
Reporting to the Unit Head, the main purpose of the Staff Veterinarian - Small Animal Internship (Surgery) is to provide junior level support to the Small Animal Surgery team-residents and specialists, and support teaching to DVM students. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to learn from our Small Animal Surgery specialists as well as a range of other disciplines across the hospital. They will assist other veterinarians in providing some supervision of clinical year veterinary students rotating through the service.

Internship in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging
The Austin Vet Specialists is growing! Our imaging case load is ever-growing and exciting with a wide variety of cases.
Therefore, we are looking for an Intern in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging to join our team.
The Internship:
The Internship is a one-year clinical position with a start date as soon as possible. The goal is to give the Intern a deeper knowledge and gain experience within the field of small animal Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. This is a full-time position (5 days per week Mon-Fri with rotational on-call weekends).
The Intern will be part of the Diagnostic Imaging team, consisting of two full-time and two part-time board-certified radiologists (ECVDI, ACVR and FANZCVS), two ECVDI residents, one imaging intern, an imaging clinician, dedicated imaging nurse, three radiographers and a full team of nurses and animal care attendants.
The daily work will revolve around the participation in the small animal ultrasound and radiology service as well as providing support to the imaging nursing team. This will include veterinary specific tasks (such as supporting the anaesthesia plans and preparation of imaging patients, managing some post-operative in-hospital patient care and assisting with discharges) as well as imaging specific tasks (such as performing ultrasounds, interpreting radiographs). Needless to say, the Intern can expect full support and instruction in performing and interpreting diagnostic imaging examinations.
Additional activities include exposure to advanced cross-sectional imaging (CT and MRI), daily hospital rounds, in-house journal club, regular imaging rounds and much more.
The internship is intended to provide the first step for a candidate with a strong interest in veterinary diagnostic imaging to start an academic, research and/or clinical career in veterinary diagnostic imaging (e.g. residency).

Our custom-built hospital (1200m2) is designed around a synergistic approach to patient care. Between specialist departments in surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, and imaging, as well as a 24/7 emergency service, we work as one team to ensure outstanding patient care and exceptional customer service.

Our hospital has all the instruments necessary to enable our team to relish their chosen careers, and flourish. This includes two ultrasound rooms, Philips EPIQ Elite ultrasound machine, Philips Incisive 64 slice CT scanner, CX-50 mobile ultrasound machine, radiography room with cloud-based PACS, dedicated radiology reading room (with soundproofing and adaptable lighting), flat-panel fluoroscopy, and much more including access to 3T MRI scanner and PET-CT scanner. In addition to our hospital duties, we also have a mobile ultrasound service, and expansion with our own high-field MRI is planned in the future.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and expertise:
- Veterinary degree that is recognised in South Australia
- Minimum of one year working experience in small animal veterinary practice
- Previous experience with ultrasound is useful but not essential
- Willingness to participate in rotating roster including weekend on-call shifts

ECVIM residency vacancy in Perth, Western Australia
Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Speciality (WAVES) has a unique opportunity for a veterinarian with a passion for internal medicine, to join our medicine department for a 3-year residency programme, starting early 2026.
Program description: The resident will assist in delivering the small animal internal medicine clinical service under the close supervision of our team of four internal medicine specialists and working alongside a board eligible medic. The resident sees referral cases in internal medicine, medical neurology, cardiology, and oncology. Training in related disciplines is organised for you in the areas of radiology, clinical pathology, oncology, cardiology, neurology, and ophthalmology, some of these are on-site and others are in external centres over East. In addition, there is a total of 18 weeks off clinics over the three years, for study and research and four weeks for conference attendance.
In addition to learning through clinical practice, you will actively participate in weekly journal clubs, daily case discussions, and participate in clinical research projects aimed at publication and participate in a quite on call roster. You will also attend international medicine congresses and national veterinary congresses during the residency training period.
The successful candidate will need the following:

- At least 3 years in clinical practice since graduation
- Have completed a rotating internship

About us: Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (WAVES) opened in 2013. It is a multidisciplinary hospital providing specialist services in internal medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and dermatology. The practice features all the equipment needed to deliver the highest quality care for patients including digital radiography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, a full range of endoscopy equipment, in house 64 slice CT and in house 1.5T MRI. Cedar Mountain Vet Referral is the newest referral surgery practice in north of Perth, opening in November 2025. The practice is in Currambine, WA (29Km north of Perth CBD). We offer specialist surgery referral services and rehabilitation for small animals. We are looking for a few enthusiastic small animal surgery interns and/or hospital patient care veterinarians who is enthusiastic, eager to learn, and participating rather than “working.” A permanent position is available if you wish.
Role Description
This is full-time, on-site role for internship in small animal surgery or hospital patient care veterinarian. The candidates will be responsible for providing hospital care (overnight care shift may be required), assist with surgery, anaesthesia, advanced imaging, and rehabilitation under supervision. The role also involves communicating with pet owners about proper postoperative care and managing medical records. Candidates will play a crucial part of the hospital.
Qualifications
- DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school (new graduates are also considered)
- Valid veterinary license to practice or registrable in WA
- Compassionate and caring attitude towards animals and their owners
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with the team and pet owners
- Ability to manage medical records accurately

Where you will be working
ARH Essendon is a 24-hour multi-disciplinary emergency and referral hospital. Dr. Simon Kudnig, who is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVS), a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Dip ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology, is the head of the Surgery department.
We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery, including advanced surgical oncologic procedures. We are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation systems, TPLO equipment, Kyon equipment (PAUL), BioMedtrix THR equipment, Ligasure, Invetra pedicle screws systems, Novetech equipment, negative pressure wound therapy system, various plating systems, neurosurgery equipment, as well as a CT scanner, MRI unit and C-arm fluoroscopy on-site.
Your New Role
The Surgery department is staffed by 3 ACVS-boarded Specialist Surgeons, a surgical Resident, 2 surgical Interns, and a large team of highly skilled surgical nurses. The role encompasses assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management and patient discharges, assisting the nurses with anaesthesia, and assisting with post-operative care of patients. Interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI.

- You must be a registered veterinarian or have a veterinary degree recognised in Australia

About You
We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable individual with interest in equine medicine. You should be able to work as part of a team and have excellent communication skills.
Your primary responsibility will be the day-to-day care of hospital cases under the supervision of a senior veterinarian. This will include intensive neonatal care, anaesthesia and post operative monitoring of surgical cases. You will also be involved in general practice with cases ranging from lameness investigations, colic work ups, breeding mares and medical patients. Our case load is variable including commercial and pleasure horses. You will gain considerable experience in all aspects of equine veterinary medicine.

An opportunity exists for a veterinarian to join our Melbourne team on a 12-month, full-time, Small Animal Surgery Internship.
CARE Collingwood is a 24-hour multi-disciplinary emergency and referral hospital in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. The hospital has specialists in Surgery and Internal Medicine. Dr Guy Yates is the head of the Surgery department. Guy is an experienced specialist small animal surgeon and Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, who maintains active clinical interests in soft tissue, orthopaedic and neurosurgery. We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery and are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation systems, TPLO equipment, Biomedtrix Universal Total Hip system, plating systems (Synthes LCP and Kyon ALPS II), Interlocking Nails, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy units, Electrosurgery (monopolar, bipolar, Ligasure), neurosurgery equipment, as well as a CT scanner and access to high-field MRI.

Job Description
Your New Role
The Surgery department is currently staffed by 2 Specialist Surgeons (Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists), one surgical Registrar, a surgical Resident, and one surgical Intern, and a large team of highly skilled surgical nurses. The role encompasses assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management and patient discharges, assisting the nurses with anaesthesia, and assisting with post-operative care of patients. Interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The commencement of the program is currently flexible, ideally prior to January 2025.
The surgery intern’s responsibilities and activities support the efficient and effective management of cases presented to the Surgery Department both as primary referrals and via the emergency service. In this role, the intern works cooperatively with, and under supervision of the surgical specialists, registrar and resident. This affords a considerable opportunity for clinical and professional development with exposure to a wide range of surgical cases and is intended to foster the intern’s interest in further learning and facilitate their progression to advanced clinical training in the discipline. This will require a balanced approach to capitalising on learning opportunities and attendance to clinical duties, requiring initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm in both aspects of this role.
Specifically, the regular duties of the surgery intern include:
- Assistance with admission of patients to, and discharge from, the hospital
- Organisation and preparation for anaesthesia of surgical patients
- Induction of anaesthesia and supervision of anaesthetic monitoring by surgical nurses
- Providing assistance to, and guidance of, the surgical nurses in the preparation of patients for surgery and performing adjunctive analgesic procedures
- Scrubbed assistance in surgery
- Supervision and management of patient recovery, as monitored by the surgical nurse
- Review of patient treatment/hospital charts
- Brief evening rounds with the responsible ICU clinician to transfer case responsibility overnight
- Assistance with diagnostic imaging investigations including radiographs, CT and MRI (external facility) examinations after appropriate training and licensing requirements have been met
- Preparation of surgical reports relating to procedures that the intern has been involved in as the assistant surge
- Thorough examination, assessment and care of any hospitalised surgery patients (including cooperation with the surgery nurse in performing any ancillary tasks).
- Preparation of daily inpatient records for hospitalised surgery patients
- Timely and comprehensive reporting to the specialists on the condition of their inpatients.
- Communication with clients and referring veterinarians on behalf of the surgeons when requested.
- The surgical intern is not required to contribute to the on-call roster although there is the potential for the intern to participate in rostered in-patient care on Saturday mornings.
- Participation in, and contribution to, weekly surgery rounds/journal club sessions
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria and have excellent communication skills and work ethic, as well as a strong knowledge base on which to build
- Clinical experience is desirable but not essential
- This position is suited to a highly motivated vet seeking to further their skills and knowledge in Small Animal Surgery
