Locum Equine Veterinary Nurse – 6 Month Opportunity

Are you an experienced Equine Veterinary Nurse looking for your next adventure? This is your chance to combine professional growth with the trip of a lifetime.
We’re looking for a motivated and skilled nurse (applicants from the UK, Australia or abroad are welcomed!) who is excited to experience life in stunning North Canterbury – just 20 minutes from Christchurch City and close to mountains, beaches, and wine country.
This fixed-term, 6-month position offers you the opportunity to play a key role in a busy equine practice during our vibrant summer season while developing your own areas of interest and expertise.
What we’re looking for:
You’ll bring a solid background in veterinary technology, equine nursing, or veterinary technician training, along with a genuine passion for horses and their care.
In this role, you’ll be:
- Assisting with equine surgeries and maintaining theatre protocols.
- Assisting ambulatory vets on farm with field surgeries, lameness exams and diagnostics.
- Delivering high-quality nursing care to surgical and hospitalised patients.
- Supporting and mentoring colleagues in a collaborative team environment.
- Helping manage daily hospital operations.
- Participating in our after-hours and weekend roster.
- Maintaining high standards of hygiene across equipment, instruments, and facilities.
- Overseeing stock control, invoicing, and accurate record-keeping.
- Communicating effectively with clients, referring vets, and the wider community.
- Coordinating bookings, admissions, triage, and discharges.

About the Role:
This is a 34-hour/week position, ideal for someone who loves variety and thrives in a busy, fast-paced environment. You'll:
- Work across surgery, medicine, consulting, lab, our branch clinics and our Emergency Vet Hospital and Animal Dermatology Canterbury
- Be part of a team of 3 nurses with a rotating roster: 1 month of regular hours followed by 2 months of flexible hours including annual and sick leave cover
- Gain hands-on experience in all areas of the clinic
What We're Looking For:
- A qualified Vet Nurse (Diploma or Bachelor)
- A minimum of 2 years' hands-on nursing experience with up to date well rounded clinical skills
- A warm communicator who builds trust with ease
- Someone capable of working both day and night shifts
- A proactive team player who delivers outstanding patient care and supports our high clinical standards

A day in the life…
- Surgery – Ensure surgical equipment is prepared and readily available for specific medical procedures and/or as directed | Assist with patient admissions, intake & pre-operative procedures, as instructed
- Pathology – Ensures relevant samples are collected and are appropriately labelled and stored | Conduct haematological, blood and other specific laboratory tests as required
- Radiography – Ensure radiographic equipment, environment and patient is prepared, as required
- Dental – Conduct extra & intra-oral examinations | Assist the Veterinarian to perform dental prophylaxis & extraction procedures
- Emergency and Critical Care - Assist the Veterinarians to administer first aid and critical care procedures, as directed
- General Animal Care – Administer daily treatments, routines and nursing care of patients as required & in consultation with the Veterinarians
- General Stock Management – Ensure medicines are stored as required by legislation and as directed along with assisting with rolling stock takes and stock levels
- Hospital Presentation - Ensure the hospital environment is inviting for customers and staff ie. heating/cooling, lighting (internal/external), smells, music/noise levels and content, etc
