Moruya is a town located in the Eurobodalla region of the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the Moruya River. The town's name is derived from the local Aboriginal word Tharawal (pronounced "mherroyah") believed to mean "home of the black swan" and black swans can be seen in local lakes and rivers.
A gold mining, riverside town since the 1850s with a rich history, the town is now primarily a service centre for a rich rural area known for its dairying, cattle, vegetables, fish and oysters. In recent times tourism, particularly connected to the Moruya River and the isolated coastal beaches, has become increasingly important. Local attractions are evident both within and in surrounding areas of the town. Its a short drive from Broulee Beach, both a family and tourist favourite destination.
