Galatea is a small rural settlement in the Whakatāne District of New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, situated on the Kāingaroa Plateau beside the Rangitāiki River. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland, pine forest, rivers and forested ranges, giving the area a distinctly rural and scenic character.
The area has strong Māori heritage, particularly connections with Ngāi Tūhoe and Ngāti Manawa. Galatea’s name dates from the nineteenth century and is associated with HMS Galatea, which visited New Zealand in 1869. The historic Fort Galatea was established during the conflicts involving Te Kooti.
Outdoor activities are an important part of the region. The Rangitāiki River provides opportunities for fishing and recreation, while nearby Lake Aniwhenua was created by hydroelectric development and is known for fishing and other outdoor pursuits. The wider area includes extensive native and plantation forest, with Murupara and Waiōhau providing nearby services and connections.
