Bangalow is a town in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, a 15-20 minute drive to the coastal towns of Byron Bay and Ballina.

The Northern Rivers region in far northeast NSW is culturally and environmentally diverse, including Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore, and Tweed Heads. Known for its beautiful coastline, subtropical rainforests, fertile hinterland, and laid-back lifestyle, Byron Bay is famous for alternative living, surf culture, and wellness tourism, though it’s become more expensive. Inland towns like Nimbin and Mullumbimby maintain strong countercultural roots, while Lismore serves as a hub for arts, education, and regional services.

The region is home to Indigenous nations including the Bundjalung people, with landscapes deeply significant to Aboriginal culture. Agriculture thrives with macadamias, sugarcane, dairy, and coffee farms. The area attracts sea changers, creatives, and retirees, fostering a strong community and environmental activism. It’s also known for music and arts festivals and a commitment to sustainability and local food production.

Northern Rivers is connected by the Pacific and Bruxner Highways to Brisbane and Sydney. Ballina Byron Gateway and Lismore airports offer flights to Sydney and Melbourne, while nearby Gold Coast Airport provides wider domestic and international links. NSW TrainLink’s XPT runs from Sydney to Casino, with bus transfers to Byron Bay, Lismore, and Tweed Heads. Though Byron has shuttles and bike hire, a car is best for exploring the dispersed coastal and inland areas.
