KATHMANDU ANIMAL TREATMENT CENTRE - VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer in Nepal with a Street Dog Welfare Organization!
The Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre, www.katcentre.org.np) in Kathmandu, Nepal is seeking volunteer veterinarians, vet nurses, and vet students to work with our two vets and six animal care staff to provide treatment for street dogs and cats.
ABOUT THE KAT CENTRE
More than 20,000 dogs live on the streets of the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. Many suffer from starvation, infected open sores, mange, and rabies. The KAT Centre’s goals are to humanely create a healthy, stable dog population in Kathmandu and to eliminate rabies, which kills hundreds of people in Nepal every year. We are accomplishing this through a widespread street dog sterilization program, medical treatment for sick and injured dogs, vaccinations, and humane education.
In the seven years since the KAT Centre was founded, we have sterilised over 40% of the female street dogs in Kathmandu, the canine population has decreased from approximately 31,000 to 22,500, and surveys show that people are more compassionate towards street dogs. The organisation’s impact goes far beyond the animals it treats.
VOLUNTEERING AT THE KAT CENTRE
As a volunteer at KAT, you will have opportunities to learn different approaches to veterinary medicine and help treat illnesses and injuries that are uncommon in developed countries. You will also be able to ride on KAT’s animal ambulances with staff who catch and release street dogs and respond to emergency rescue calls. Additionally, we hope you will share your knowledge and experience with our vets and other staff to help make sustained improvements to our procedures.
We welcome volunteers for any amount of time, and no particular experience is necessary. Please come to the KAT Centre willing to adapt to the unpredictability of life in Nepal and the limited resources available. Since we don’t have a structured volunteer program, we encourage volunteers to take initiative to ask the staff how they can get involved.

ZANZIBAR - EAST AFRICA

ZAASO
Description: Zanzibar Animals Affection Society (ZAASO) is a community-based, registered, non-profit organisation that provides shelter, adoption, foster care, rescue, and veterinary treatment and services to animals in need.
ZAASO is committed to improving the welfare of all animals in Zanzibar, including livestock, working and domestic animals. The organisation was founded in 2009 in response to the extensive maltreatment of animals apparent in Zanzibar’s urban and rural areas. The organisation began with a rescue operation of severely malnourished, abused and wounded cart-donkeys and cows. The organisation now consists of the following projects: ZAASO Clinics Project; Sanctuary and Shelter; Vaccinations Project; Education and Awareness (currently being developed further); Donkey of the Month Project; Legislative Action; Internship and Volunteer Programme.
ZAASO has grown from strength to strength over the past few years, and has become an essential part of the Zanzibar community. Unfortunately the level of animal care and veterinary skills are very poor, and are not easily accessed by the community and public. A typical vet trained in Tanzania only attends university for 3 years, and does not always gain field experience before graduation. On Zanzibar they depend on veterinary doctors who have not always fulfilled the education requirements, but do have field experience. Because of this lack of knowledge ZAASO is in dire need of experienced and qualified professionals to assist with the training of staff members and volunteers at the shelter.
ZAASO is in the process of setting up a volunteer program which will allow international veterinary students and graduates to assist with the general running of existing programs and overseeing the set up of educational programs.
Organization: Zanzibar Animals Affection Society (ZAASO)
Project Location: Kianga, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Contact: Tarryn Gillit and Natalie Vollaire Duncker
Email: zaasokianga@hotmail.co.uk ; nvollaire@yahoo.co.uk; tgillitt@gmail.com
Website: www.zaaso.org
Period: Year round
Languages: English
Who can volunteer: Adults of both sexes
Commitment: 1 month minimum
Cost: Any individual wishing to volunteer may do so at a small fee of $10 per night for accommodation. Food is not included but transport will be provided once a week into Stonetown to buy personal supplies. A communal kitchen with a fridge and stove is supplied. Local transport is also easily accessed from the sanctuary, so it is possible to buy food and general supplies quite easily.

INDIA - VETTRAIN COURSES - VOLUNTEERS

In 2012 VBB, with support from University of Queensland and the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), plan to run VetTrain courses in Delhi (at the Jeevashram Foundation) and Gangtok (at the VBB SARAH project in Sikkim).
The purpose of these courses is to produce increased skills and knowledge for veterinarians, assistant veterinarians, project managers and animal handlers in the areas directly relevant to an Animal Birth Control –Anti-Rabies (ABC-AR) programme. The project aims to significantly impact animal welfare in India by promoting the use of accepted surgical, anaesthetic and pain management protocols and humane animal capture and handling techniques. In addition, we aim to reduce or eliminate inhumane culling as a means of dog population control by promoting the use of ABC. It will allow the AWBI to implement and enforce a higher quality of ABC-AR standards and increase the capacity for rabies control work in India.
VBB requires volunteer veterinarians and veterinary nurses with at least 2 years practical experience to assist us with the training courses. The course length is 15 days and volunteers can attend more than one training course in a different location if desired or also visit one of VBB’s other projects in India. At each location basic accommodation and meals will be provided. Training materials, presentations and English speaking specialised support staff will be available at each centre and VBB have a local Project manager to assist all volunteers. Volunteers are also encouraged to present to the trainees a topic of their choosing.
Ideally, but not essentially, volunteers will have some training experience and have worked previously in an ABC programme in a developing community.
Each regional training centre is located in an interesting and unique region in India and joining one of our VetTrain projects is a great way to explore the country whilst meeting local people and contributing to animal welfare on a large scale.

SIKKIM - NE INDIA - VOLUNTEERS
Experienced volunteer veterinarians and veterinary nurses are required at the Sikkim Anti-Rabies and Animal Health (S.A.R.A.H.) Programme, Gangtok, India. The state of Sikkim is nestled in the beautiful Himalayan foothills of North-Eastern India. Vets Beyond Borders (VBB) works in partnership with the Government of Sikkim and the Fondation Brigitte Bardot to enable this successful extensive state-wide Animal Birth Control – Anti-Rabies (ABC-AR) programme.
The project operates twelve months a year though it is not recommended for volunteers to travel to Sikkim during the monsoon season (usually June to August). A usual length of stay for volunteers is between 3 and 8 weeks but longer periods may also be possible. VBB volunteers receive no remuneration and must cover their own travel, insurance and visa costs however comfortable accommodation and working conditions are provided.
Veterinarians require at least 2 years experience in small animal practice and proficiency in canine sterilisation surgeries. Veterinary Nurses require at least 1 years experience in small animal practice. As this is an early release programme, all ovariohysterectomies are performed via a right flank approach - most vets become proficient in this technique relatively quickly.
For more information about the SARAH Programme please visit http://www.vetsbeyondborders.org/our-projects/sikkim-anti-rabies-and-animal-health-programme-sarah/. If you have specific questions about volunteering for SARAH after reading the information on our website please contact the SARAH Programme Manager. (helen.byrnes@vetsbeyondborders.org)

VETS BEYOND BORDERS - VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer veterinarians and veterinary nurses are required to travel to the Vets Beyond Borders Bylakuppe Rabies and Disease Control Programme in South India. This project is in partnership with the Fondation Brigitte Bardot and the Sera Mey Social Services. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the dog health programme in a restricted area of the South Indian highlands amongst a fascinating community of Tibetan Buddhist monks in one of the world’s largest monastic complexes.
This dog sterilisation, health care and anti-rabies programme started operation in early 2011 and veterinary and veterinary nurse volunteers are needed to staff the clinic, which is based at a human health centre. Volunteers are asked to stay for a minimum of 2 weeks, however longer stays are welcome and preferred.
Previous experience working in field camps in developing communities is preferred but not essential. Veterinarians require at least 2 years experience in small animal practice and proficiency in canine sterilisation surgeries. Veterinary Nurses require at least 1 years experience in small animal practice with good anaesthesia knowledge and be able to perform general surgical and medical nursing tasks, place IV catheters, monitor and maintain IV anaesthesia and be able to work with the local para-vets who will provide basic animal care.
Volunteers must have the ability to work in minimalist conditions and be adaptable. Good sense of humour and flexible, tolerant attitude to different cultural attitudes and beliefs is essential as is cooperative attitude and good team work.
The VBB Bylakuppe project is, in many ways, unique as it situated for the moment within the area of a Tibetan monastery. Hence, we would like you to be aware of the following basic points when considering volunteering on this project.
- This is a no-kill project;
- For cultural reasons you will not be able to consume meat or alcohol onsite;
- Clothing should be discreet for men and women;
- If you are with a partner please be very discreet in how you relate to each other in public;
- The monastery is a working university with schedules in operation, so while interaction with the monks here is a special feature of this project, this may be limited.
Please contact VBB on secretariat@vetsbeyondborders.org if you have any further questions on volunteering or the cultural/religious context of the project.
For more general information about volunteering with VBB please visit www.vetsbeyondborders.orgIf you are interested in volunteering for this project and satisfy the minimum requirements, please visit our website to register. Please note that you must become a VBB member at http://www.vetsbeyondborders.org/how-you-can-help/become-a-member-of-vets-beyond-borders/become-a-member/ to apply to volunteer in our projects.
