Shanghai has been described as the ‘showpiece’ of the booming Chinese economy. Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate and is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River.

With a population of 24.2 million as of 2018, it is the most populous urban area in China and the second most populous city proper in the world. It is a global centre for finance, innovation and transportation. The Port of Shanghai is the world’s busiest container port. Originally a fishing village, in the 19th century the Shanghai grew due to being favourable port location. In the 1990s the city experienced intense redevelopment which also paved the way for the return of the finance sector. The city has now emerged as a hub for international trade and finance.
