Gore is the second-largest town in the Southland region, and is divided into two parts by the Mataura River. Located 64km northeast of Invercargill and 70km west of Balclutha , with  Dunedin and Invercargill being  the nearest cities.

Gore is the official home of country music in New Zealand and is world famous for its brown trout fishing.

Since 2000 large numbers of farms in the surrounding area have converted to dairy farms to take advantage of high prices for dairy produce. This growth has led to low unemployment in the town.
